I picked up COD4: MW when I bought my PS3 in 2007. It pretty much started everything, so if you don't mind some dated graphics, give that one a shot have fun!

I've never played MW series but there's usually MW people or Black Ops people. I'm a Black Ops person myself. I heard MW2 was better than MW3 though. Since I'm a black ops guy I'd say from a multiplayer perspective I'd chose black ops, from what I gather it's the most balanced.

As for campgain, from what I hear unless you get the older games for under $10 then don't bother. CoD is ALL about the multiplayer. For that reason I'm inclined to agree with darknovaxp, Black Ops and up is pretty much all you should be playing in multiplayer.
