[Tutorial] Swap Stock HD & Install New One in PS4

The following has been created to help anyone who feels it's time to upgrade their PS4's default 500GB Hard drive with something bigger or faster. I've seen multiple video's like others but I felt maybe with a few steps mentioned around some of the video's or piece mealed from other sites, this might be helpful making it a complete step by step process. And to let everyone know THIS DOES NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. I'll provide links from SONY THEMSELVES who encourage you to upgrade your hard drive if you like and provide tutorials from Sony themselves in how to do it (not as detailed as mine but enough to get you started). So Please, if you have any questions or anything to add, comment and let me know Smiley Happy

Step 1 : Software Download and Placement

1a. First, before you do anything with your PS4, go on to the PS4 website on an internet connected PC and download the RIGHT file size for Firmware updates when upgrading your Hard Drive.

People run into this problem many times as they are confused between the 308mb file and the 859mb. Question - why is one file size bigger than the other? Answer - One is merely a firmware update (309mb) as the Full OS is already part of the Hardrive, the other is the full OS with Playroom included (859mb) as your hard drive is pretty much empty. Here's the proper link so to not confuse you with simple instructions as well Smiley Happy!

1b. Plug a USB thumbdrive into your PC, and On the thumb drive, create a folder titled "PS4" and within that folder, Create another folder titled  "UPDATE". Copy the [859mb] pup file and paste inside the UPDATE folder.

Notice that those two folders are in Caps, make sure you do this. Again, make sure you have downloaded the larger Firmware file (859mb), it's known as a pup file btw. Here's the folder structure with where to copy and paste the firmware/pup file to.

Step 2 : Removing the Default Hard Drive

2a. If your PS4 is in stand-by mode (orange light), Hold the Power button for 7 seconds until a second beep is heard.

2b. Unhook all the cables from the PS4 so there is no power or possible problems. See the Glossy part of the PS4? That comes off, Gently press from the middle and slide it off, you can use the sides to pop it off as well (prefereable near the disc drive.)

It's really easy to slip it off and requires no tools to do this whatsoever. Getting the top off at first may be tricky and is entirely up to you how you pop it off. I went from the disc drive bay and lifted it to remove the glossy piece, found that to be the easiest way to remove it.

2c. You should now see the Hard drive Bay, one screw is securing the drive to the console's HDD bay. Grab a small philips screw drewdriver and unscrew that to unsecure it from the bay.

Any screwdriver should work but I found that a small screwdriver did it well without stripping the screw itself. Screw drivers used for glasses are a bit too small btw.

2d. Pull the drive all the way out and you should see that the PS4 hard drive is secured with four screws. Use the same screwdriver, remove those four.

Step 3 : Replace with New Hard Drive

3a. Now make sure the HDD you're replacing the stock with is either the same size or less (MUST be a SATA 2 or higher of a 2.5" Laptop Drive, 9.5mm or less).

3b.Secure the new drive with the four screws you removed from the stock one earlier and slide it back into the HDD bay, secure the single screw to the bay as well.

3c. To finish the hard drive swap, Slide the glossy piece of the PS4 back on and plug all your cords into the back of the PS4.

Alternately, if you are swapping a HDD from your PS3 to your PS4, you must format it yourself (most likely from a PC with a HDD enclosure) as the PS4 intially has problems formatting an already been used HDD (already reported by multiple users having this issue).

STEP 4 : Installing the Firmware with your new Hard Drive

4a. Plug your thumb drive and your DualShock 4 via USB cord into the PS4's USB ports. Hold down the Power button for 7 seconds, you should now be in SAFE MODE (light should change from Blue to White).

20131225_164206.jpg  20131225_164347.jpg

4b. You will be prompted with a few simple instructions but the key here is to make sure your controller is on and you select "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)".

DO NOT select anything else or you may run into bigger issues I can not help you here with.

20131225_164357.jpg  20131225_164506.jpg

4c. After a bit of time (and some prompts), You will be asked to plug a thumb drive into your PS4 but since we already did so, select OK and let the Firmware install.

You should start up with the famous PlayStation Logo as if you just bought and turned on the console. Congrat's you're done!

Below is a Video version of this tutorial from Marc the Geek, who makes it look super easy! if this write up happened to not be easy enough, check it out if you like but hopefully this was easy enough to follow! Welcome to the Forums and have a good day!

So every link (including yours) will only DL th 320MB update file... I cannot find the full install file anywhere. I just spent an hour with Sony online chat support talking to a guy who wasn't listening to my problem and then told me to send my unit in for service or wait a few days, lol.... I think sony accidentally put the same update file in the reinstall link, rendering my HD upgrade attempts futile. Do they usually take a while to release the full reinstall file after a software update? I can only DL the 1.60 update file.

This has been fixed and you can download the full large Firmware now.

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive and wanted to know if you had any suggestions about file transfers. As is, my PS4 hard drive is almost full. Whats the easiest way to transfer all my files from my old hard drive to the new?

Nice post.I did all that but I still have a problem.I changed the hard drive and everything worked just great until I put my ps4 in rest mode. After downloading all my games I started it up and my ps4 asked me to enter country and date and time.I already did that after I changed my hard drive.
