SKILLPOINTS... not really Killpoints

5 replies 159 views Edited Jun 5, 2013

SP:  Skill Points.  Not to be confused or connected with Warpoints.  Or confused with ISK or Aurum.

We think we know how to earn Skill Points, but the results keep proving us wrong.  I THINK shat I know that's CORRECT about Skill Points is this:

  • NO, tt is NOT proportionately related to Warpoints.  You get Warpoints by how many TASKS you accomplish during the fight (kill a clone; hack a Null, frag a turret, down a DS).  But you can earn major SP without doing any of these things during the fight.

  • It is proportionately controlled by specific actions you do that COULD POTENTIALLY ASSIST YOUR TEAMATES on the battlefield.  Destroying an enemy clone regen unit gets you more SP than destroying two enemy infantry (even though the Warpoints are the same).  Hacking and defending a Null cuz your squad leader told you to gets you more SP than hacking it just cuz you felt like it.

  • It is substantially controlled by trying NEW support-role activities that potentially help your fellow mercs.  If you hack a turret, climb in it, and just live in it for ten minutes without firing a shot, you get higher SP than if you just hack the turret and walk away.  Enter an HAV and park it around back for five minutes, and you boost your SP without firing a single shot.

Call all of these examples “Experience-building on the battlefield”.  I’ve racked up major SP in single Skirmishes, just by using damage-control modules on a truck, or landing four times in a DS.  Almost no ISK reward, ZERO warpoints, but 4,000 SP.   It’s weird, but SP is NOT linked to direct combat.  It’s determined as something it's calling  Battle Experience.

The actual formula only CCP knows, but it definitely is biased toward TEAM-contributing activities.  Post your SP-boost discoveries, theories  and arguments here.

Interesting ideas here.    I tend to get 5k SP/ ambush game and 10k for skirmish/dom on average.  I run logi and hack everything I can.   I do the support role, I am that guy running into fire all armor tanked up to res you then hiding after :smileytongue:

:smileyvery-happy::smileylol:Plymco you cracked me up.

I felt sure I had you pegged as a body-bag filler, sending 'em back to the clone farms left and right!

You rack up 10K in SP just supporting and hacking.  So after a typical Skirm or Ambush, your Warpoints (and hopefully your # deaths) don't anywhere jive with your SP, at least not in any obvious direct way.

That's the effect I'm seeing.

In one Skirmish, I called in a dropship:

I boarded, took off, hovered at max altitude so no one could target me, and landed.  Repeated this takeoff/land five times during the Skirm.  Reward was 89 ISK (that figures...), and 5,300 Skillpoints.

Now that you've said all this I'll actually pay attention.   I'm kind of a numbers oriented person so if I do pay attention I'll probably be able to recognize the pattern and if there is any relation between WP and SP earned.

And yeah, my KDR is like 1.0 :smileytongue:

Holy Shmokes!!

I was playing Domination matches all weekend, and suddenly I wasn't getting ANY Skillpoints at the end of the match. It says "Bonus Skillpoints Exhausted".

I can still rack up Warpoints, but now my Skillpoints DIRECTLY relate to my warpoints. 450 WP earned in the match gives me....450 Skillpoints.

I have no choice but to put my character on PASSIVE skillpoint setting for a while. Now they've got me perplexed.

So as postscript, I did some deeper homework and found this on one of the Dust 514 Forums.

VERY GREAT THANKS  to this poster, Bonchu Blunt Rifle for presenting this explanation in his forum:

"...In Dust 514 there are skillpoints that are earned each match. How many skillpoints are awarded depends upon whether or not there are "bonus skillpoints" available or not. You can see how many many bonus skillpoints you have remaining at the end of each match in the after battle results (I do not know if there is any other way to see them other then to manually track them). Each week (on Wednesday after the servers come up) your bonus skillpoints are reset (to 190 000 skillpoints roughly). At the end of each match if you have bonus skillpoints remaining you are rewarded a number of skillpoints from the bonus pool using a calculation that is mostly a factor of how long the match lasted. There is a component for how many warpoints you made (more on this later) but for the most part you are being rewarded skillpoints for time playing. The points are removed from your "bonus skillpoints" and added to your character. After this happens you are then awarded an additional 50% if you have an active skillpoint booster (a character augmentation that can be bought off the market for aurum or as a reward in one of the mercenary packs bought off the PSN store).

The reasoning here is that for every week there is a more or less even skillpoint playing field up for the first 190000 skillpoints from a "player skill" perspective. You could be the worst Dust player in existence but you will still be able to achieve that bonus skillpoint pool just like everyone else assuming you actually log into the matches (in addition to the passive skillpoints that accumulate even if you never play a match).

After the bonus skillpoint pool is used up the rules change. Now the number of skill points per match is entirely merit based - based on the accumulation of "war points" (WP for short). Warpoints are awarded for a number of ingame activities - the most obvious being 50 WPs for a kill 25 WPs for an assist on a kill. Other activities giving warpoints include repairing teammates, blowing up installations and vehicles, giving out ammunition to teammates - etc. The skillpoints awarded is exactly equal to the number of warpoints you make - up to a maximum of 1000 per match.

Again if you have an active booster you are awarded an additional 50% (which means that if you achieved the maximum number of skillpoints allowed - i.e. you made 1000 or more war points then you will be awarded an additional 50% or 500 more skillpoint for a total of 1500 skillpoints maximum per match).

The reasoning here is that people who want to grind ahead of everyone else need to do two things - be good at the game to acheive lots of war points, spend a lot of time playing matches because there is a 1000 skill point limit on every match..."

You get it!?  ...:smileywink: I do NOW...

I remember the first time I hit the skill cap, i was agitated beyond belief.  "Why am I not getting skillpoints, this game will stink if this is all the points I get per game"  :smileytongue:
