What happened to guarding functions during Chapter 5?

I have a major problem since my third playthrough which I am currently doing. During Chapter 5, no matter how hard I tried to press the Circle button when I timed it, the character refuses to guard and everytime I do guard, I take triple times as much damage as an unblocked attack. Grinding is too much because I'm dying too much and it's non-stop. I would imagine that since Eternal Sonata is not sold in stores anymore, it may have been pulled off the shelf for this problem I'm stating. Wouldn't you agree? It's as if almost an attack like an arrow piercing through the shield.

Humm? that sound interesting.  Got all the way to Chap. 5 and what level do you have your team set up on?
