I've played through the game twice now and both times, late in the game, the hot key function starts to crash the game. Whenever I press a directional button to quick select a weapon the game will freeze. The best I can figure is that it happens when my save file gets to about 7,000 KB. Oddly pressing Up to select a different ammo type would not freeze the game.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Which game are you refering to? I assume New Vegas.
In either case, I've never experience any actual freezes, just heavy lagging. I've had cases where the hot keys have not responded at all, but it has never been game crippling even one my largest file, which is over 7 MB.
I've seen you around for a while Zafo- so I figure you've already tried it, but just to be sure, have you tried deleting your Game Data (not Saved Data) and saving new files rather than just overwriting the same file?

I haven't. I hadn't thought of creating a new save file every time I save. However, as often as I save (every 10 minutes or so) that would be more trouble than its worth. I suppose I'll give it a try, it'd be worth it, but now that I know what's happening I'll just select everything from my pipboy.
thanks for replying, seems like there are a lot less people in here lately. Most posts are weeks old.

What you need to delete is your cache memory. You access it through your web browser. In the browser just hit triangle button, go to tools then go to "clear cache" and click yes. That should help you a lot. Just remember to do that often and the game will perform MUCH better for you.

huh, i've never heard of that. I'll give it a try, but surprisingly I finished the game a third time and it didn't happen at all. And my game save got to over 8000 KB. It seems to have remedied itself... but I'm sure it will come back.

It's really not any trouble at all if you get in the habit of doing it. The way I do it, I create a game save when I really start the game (just before the part where it asks you if you want to change anything about your character; in Fallout 3, this is when you leave the vault; in Fallout: NV, this is when you leave Goodsprings). Then, I keep about 5 or 6 revolving save files. One save file is made the last time I was at my house (or wherever else I pick to store my loot). When I go back there for another loot drop, I'll make a separate save file and alternate using the two "house" save files (that way, if my stuff disappears, I can reload and get it back). For the others, I alternate using them throughout any quests that I'm doing or even whenever I'm just free-roaming (this is so that I don't run the risk of making an undesirable decision and accidentally saving it). I also make another save file whenever I am about to start or have completed either a major quest or a quest that is notorious for glitches. Although I often will have 30 or more save files going in a game, trust me when I say that it has spared me headaches on more than one occasion. By the way, I use this method for Elder Scrolls games too.
