Well, I think that's before they even figured out how the MP would work. Looks like they're just playing around with things from GoW3 to me.

Why have a shield? The only use for it would be to block, but we can already do that with weapons. I guess it may look good while holding a shield. I just don't see a need for them.

And why do some want so many weapon classes? Quality over quantity my friends.

Because in Ghost of Sparta Kratos uses a shield with his spear...  not to mention its pretty standard Spartan weaponry.  You could easily have some spears with shields and some not.
