As it stands, we hack and slash till there is a chance to grapple someone, then we sit there and watch a 3 second animation which is exactly the same every single time. My question is, why not turn the grapple system into a quick time event? The more buttons you're able to combo together would do more damage, and missing a button would cause the grapple combo to end. It would be far more skill based then simply pressing a button one time then watching an animation of you smashing some dudes skull in with a hammer.

No, just NO.
The last thing an action game needs is more quicktime events. It also makes it unfair to players who are not able to perform them as well as others.

This is a competitive online game is it not? Shouldn't more skilled players be able to out preform those of lesser skill?

It's an issue of balance. If you're experiencing being grappled it should be the same for everyone, not priority to those who can button mash and kill the other player who has no chance to defend or escape during an animation.
If that was the case every fighting game would be ruined by a quicktime mechanic resulting in instant death to the player who is grabbed.
There is a specific sequence of animations happening during a grapple or a Brutal Kill. You don't add button mashing to it because it isn't Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

It wouldn't be button mashing at all, you would have to click the exact button, pretty much exactly when it appeared, just like the chest game they have, if you miss it, the grapple ends and the player is released. It would require the player to pay attention, especially since it wont the same button sequence every time.

I hate QTEs. Also, grappling is situational enough, why should you have to manage a QTE as well.
A good player will be difficult get a grapple on unless you can read them.

A grapple doesn't become a grapple if you start putting other things into it that furthers damage. Then it becomes a pummel or something else and the whole idea is to grab and have the animation end as quick as it can. The damage is already high and you don't want it furthered to a kill because there's a reason that Brutal Kill exists on it's own.

I'm sure you'll have this chance in single player mode quite a bit . When the stun option comes up the player really only needs one more hit to be dead so if people were bad it would just stop the brutal kills. Not too many combos could be done in the small amount of damage needed to finish them. I think it might take more time for finishes if they did it this way and I'm not a fan of how long it takes now. If you are group fighting you have to wait for the brutal kill to end to engage , this would just prolong that wait.
