Am I at fault here or is the machine? Kinda disappointed I can't even play two games on a two day old console.
Welcome to the GT forum, sargentsticky!
You have to realise what you bought. Even the original 20 Gb model had hard drive space limitations. I don't know a lot about this particular PS3 model, but if you can add another hard drive for more installations and storage, then you had better figure out how to do that, otherwise the console will have to be used more for media playing, as many PS3 games make big installs.
If the store where you bought it allows returns, I would recommend returning this one and getting one that has a reasonable amount of hard drive space (bigger is usually much better). If you want to only play a few small games and if you are content to use the console mainly as a media player, then it is still one of the best Blu-ray players around.
The 12gb is an entry level with a flash drive and is decieving on what it can do. There should be a diclamer on the box that say it is a Blue Ray player with the ability to save a game or two. By the time you get a ExHD and set it up you have spent more than the HD equipt PS3 cost.
Wow - 12 GB? I never knew the PS3 had that small of a HD...that's about the amount of space I have left on my 60 GB system lol. I'm in agreement with MastrGT on this one though...try to return the system to where you got it (hopefully they allow exchanges/refunds), and opt for getting at the bare minimum, a 20 GB, which will leave you with roughly 15 GB left over after setting everything up. If you get around to playing GT5, I think you'll really enjoy it.

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.
I had to google 12GB PS3 to even know one was real. LOL
apparently there is one of the newest (superslim) model ps3 sold with only 12GB in some regions.
It does seem kinda silly to me, after all you can set Playstation Home to reserve up to 12GB just as a cache for downloaded spaces, etc. I upgraded mine to a 500GB drive and it's well over half full.
I would really recommend to the OP or any one ofr that matter exchanging for a model with more storage or upgrading it yourself. I assume you can still do that with the superslims.
As far as I know; the 12 GB models are PAL; not available in the North American region. It shouls be fairly straight-foward to instal/upgrade.
Found this guide for replacing/upgrading hard disk for 12 GB and 500 GB superslim PS3s on the UK Playstation support page.
If you can't be bothered with the hassle to upgrade; the Unchartered 3 GOTY Edition 250 GB PS3 bundle is for US$ 269.99 MSRP
MS selling a 4GB box is a little more understandable than SONY selling a 12GB PS3 because most if not all games require a hefty install for PS3's. Xbox will let you run off of the disc.
still, the 4gb and 12gb systems respectively seem like more or less rip-offs.
