What are Power Shots?
Each character is allowed to use a number extra power boosts that make the character able to hit any club 10 yards further than normal. The number of power boosts available is determined by the character used and their Loyalty Level.
Extra power shots are available at Loyalty Levels 1, 5 and 8.
Power Shots are activated by pressing the 'Square' button before the shot is taken. To deactivate just press the 'Square' button again.
The Driver (1 Wood) has two different power modes available: Fire = 10 yards longer, and Blue flames = 15-20 yards longer, but it is important to get
a good impact!
You can still attempt a power shot when you have used all of the allocated number up already, but it makes the impact zone (pink area) incredably small, making it a very risky shot!
How do you put spin on the ball?
Basically, hold the keys shown below when setting the impact to achieve the desired spin. The amount of spin achieved is dependent on your character's skills, the type of clubs they are using, which club they are using for that shot, the lie of the ball and the impact you get.
* Backspin: press the 'Down' button when setting the impact.
* Topspin: press the 'Up' button when setting the impact.
* Fade (ball moves left to right): press the 'Left' button when setting the impact.
* Draw (ball moves from right to left): press the 'Right' button when setting the impact.
NB: You do not have to press the directional button at the same time as the impact - you can press and hold it at any point after you started the swing. You just have to ensure that you still have it held when you set the impact (usually the 3rd click on the 'X' button).
How do you use Super Spin?
This is similar to normal spin, but produces much more spin in the desired direction if hit correctly. To achieve any type of super spin you must get a perfect impact otherwise you will hit the ball with normal spin (the direction that you pressed when you set the impact).
Super-backspin: press the 'Up' button when you set the power, then press the 'Down' button when you set the impact.
Super-topspin: press the 'Down' button when you set the power, then press the 'Up' button when you set the impact.
Super-fade (ball moves left to right): press the 'Right' button when you set the power, then press the 'Left' button when you set the impact.
Super-draw (ball moves from right to left): press the 'Left' button when you set the power, then press the 'Right' button when you set the impact.
How do you use Special Shots?
There are a number of special shots that can be used if the character you are using is at a high enough Loyalty Level.
Description: If you hit the pin with the ball whilst using Super-backspin the ball will rebound off the pin and spin back toward the hole (the ball may strike the pin a number of times before it goes in the hole or comes to rest).
Available: Loyalty Level 4 and above.
Description: If you hit the pin with the ball whilst using Super-topspin the ball will spin up the flag pole then back down and, hopefully, into the hole.
Available: Loyalty Level 4 and above.
Description: If you hit the pin with the ball whilst using either Super-fade or Super-draw the ball will rebound off the pin and then spiral back toward the hole (and hopefully in!).
Available: Loyalty Level 10 or above.
Description: The greater your character's backdoor percentage, the more likely a putt will drop in if it rolls around the rim of the cup.
Available: All Loyalty Levels, but the backdoor percentage increases at loyalty levels 3, 6, 9 and 12.
How do you use Power Fine Tuning?
Power Fine Tuning can be used when a character's Loyalty Level is 2 or above. This allows you to set the impact with the 'Triangle' and 'Circle' buttons to change the amount of power the shot is hit with.
Reduce power by 1%: press the 'Circle' button when setting the impact (instead of the 'X' button).
Increase power by 1%: press the 'Triangle' button when setting the impact (instead of the 'X' button). NB: You can not increase the power past 100%.
Why doesn't the ball land where the club indicator predicted it would?
This is the very reason that makes the game so enjoyable to play, as it is extremely easy to take a shot but there are a number of factors that need to be considered (adjusted for) when wanting the ball to land somewhere specific, such as in the hole! This is where a player can really demonstrate their skill and judgement!
Factors you can not adjust for:
*The power that you hit the shot with was less than 100% - If you line up with the expectation of hitting it with 100% power and don't the ball will most likely fall short of the target!
*You either hooked or sliced the shot (you didn't set the impact within the pink swing zone!) - You may end up either side of your intended target and probably short too!
*The character's ability to control the ball: If the character you are using has poor control, this will randomly send the ball offline - usually within the white cone shown in front of a character before they hit the ball.
Factors that can be considered before taking a shot:
The wind direction and strength: The predicted path of the ball does not take into account the direction or strength of the wind. The wind will push the ball away from the predicted line in the direction of the wind indicator arrow. The stronger the wind the more the ball will be pushed offline. You need to consider how high the club you are about to use hits the ball, as the higher the ball goes the more effect the wind has on it.
The ball lie quality: There is a percentage (or percentage range) shown in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This percentage shows the likely strike quality of the ball, which is nothing to do with how much power you select - e.g. if you hit a shot with 100% power, but the strike quality percentage is only 95%, the ball will only travel 95% of its predicted distance. Rain, snow, rough and bunkers have the most dramatic effect on strike quality, although, even the flatness of the ball's lie on a fairway can have a subtle effect too! Hit the ball harder or use a longer club to compensate!
The ball lie direction: This is shown by the image of a ball just above the ball strike quality percentage. The direction of the lie can sometimes have a more dramatic effect on where the ball ends up than the direction and strength of the wind! If the lie is sloping in a particular direction the ball will set off in the slope's direction away from the predicted line in a similar way that the wind pushes a shot off line. An uphill slope will push the ball higher (more susceptible to the effect of the wind!) and will make it land shorter than predicted, whereas, a downhill lie will make the ball travel lower and possibly further (dependant on the terrain!). The greater the slope the more effect there will be!
The carry and roll of the club used: The predicted target shows where the ball would end up not taking any factors into consideration - it does not show you where the ball will land! The longer a club can hit the ball the greater the distance between where it will carry to (land) and where it will end up (roll to). The greater this distance (the carry to end point) the greater the effect of the terrain will have on the ball.
The elevation of the target: Generally, if the target is much lower than your current lie of the ball, it will go further than indicated. If the target is above the current lie of the ball you need to consider the carry of the club, as the terrain may prevent the usual amount of roll - the ball may end up short (or worse!).
The inverted pyramid marker, which also shows how far the ball should travel, also indicates evelation of the target lie in respect to your current lie:
Red = the target lie is above your current lie (a club that hits the ball further may be required);
Yellow = the target lie is approximately at the same elevaltion as your current lie;
Blue = the target lie is below your current lie (a club that hits the ball shorter may be required).
The Target Grid shows the slope of the target lie:
Red means sloping up hill
Green means flat;
Blue means sloping down hill.
The lie where the ball will land: Be aware of the slope of the terrain where you intend the ball to land, as it will influence the ball from it's carry point to where it ends up. E.g. A shot played to a downhill sloping green (slopping downward away from the player) will make the ball roller further than its predicted distance. Also consider the lie even when you are not approaching the green, as there are some pretty harsh fairways (Crown Links!) that deliberately steer the ball toward hazards, such as bunkers, water or Out-of-Bounds!
What are the available character abilities?
Each character will have a certain amount of each of the 5 abilities below, which can be enhanced by using different clubs and balls.
The greater the bar the further the character can hit the ball.
The greater the bar the less the shot direction may deviate (the light cone in front of your character shows the potential deviation either way).
The greater the bar the easier it is to hit a perfect/good impact.
The greater the bar the more back and top spin can be achieved.
The greater the bar the greater the amount the character can draw or fade the ball.
What are Character Classes?
All of the available characters belong in one of three available character classes: Novice, Intermediate and Expert. Each character will have its own abilities, but generally:
* Novice: Low power, spin and sidespin, but high impact and control abilities.
* Intermediate: Average for all abilities.
* Expert: High power, but low impact.
What do you get for increasing character's Loyalty Levels?
Each time you fill up a heart that character's Loyalty level increases.
Each new level unlocks a new ability:
1. Increased number of power shots.
2. Power Fine Tuning available.
3. Backdoor putt up 10%, extra costume.
4. Homing and Rising Shots are now legal.
5. Increase number of power shots.
6. Backdoor putt up 10%, extra costume.
7. Intermediate Clubs are now unlocked.
8. Increase number of power shots.
9. Backdoor putt up 10%, extra costume.
10. Spiral Shots are now legal.
11. Advanced Clubs are now unlocked.

What do the different types of clubs do?
Different types of club can be unlocked by playing the Single Player Challenge Mode.
There are eight types of club - e.g.. Standard, Big Air, Pin Hole, etc. - each enhances a character's ability.
Each type of club has three different levels: Novice (B), Elite (A) and Special (S) - e.g. Big Air Novice (B), Big Air Elite (A), Big Air Special (S).
The different types of club are available for each of the three classes of character - e.g. Novice Big Air Elite (A), Intermediate Big Air Elite (A), Expert Big Air Elite (A).
So that is a total of 72 different sets of clubs (but only have to worry about what type you choose (from 8), the character you pick and their Loyalty Level will determine the rest! Characters use the Elite clubs at loyalty level 7, and use Special clubs at loyalty level 11).

How do you score points?
As you play through Hot Shots Golf, you will receive points for about every action you can do in the game. Points add to your overall round total and may decide the outcome of a game

How do you achieve a higher rank/level (not online grade)?
Ranks 1 to 15 can just be achieved by posting good scores on all of the original courses supplied with the game.
Higher ranks require offical online tournament wins:
Level 16: 1 win at G1 level.
Level 17: 5 wins at G0 level (and over 120 official online tournaments played).
Level 18: 10 wins at G0 level (and over 160 official online tournaments played).
Level 19: 20 wins at G0 level (and over 200 official online tournaments played).
Level 20: 30 wins at G0 level (and over 240 official online tournaments played).

What are the online ranks?
There are four online ranks: G3, G2, G1 and G0. Where G3 is the entry level rank and G0 are the best players of the game!
What are Online Tournaments?
You can play in online tournaments by entering any lobby in the online mode - it doesn't matter which lobby or floor you enter.
All new players start with a rank of G3. This means that you can only participate in tournaments ranked G3 or GF - you can not enter G0, G1 or G2 tournaments. (GF meaning rank free tournament).
You may have to meet additional requirements to enter tournaments, as some tournaments (most) are restricted to a particular character, character class or course, which you must have unlocked in Challenge mode in order to compete.
You can book a place in any tournament from any floor or lobby by accessing the tournament menu (press 'Triangle') and using the 'R2' and 'L2' buttons to scroll between floors (there are ten floors in total). However, you can only "jump into" a tournament that is about to start if you are in a lobby on the same floor as the tournament. The 'R1' and 'L1' buttons allow you to view different hour slots, but can can only book an hour in advance.
How do I get promoted to the next online rank?
The only way to increase your rank is to play in official online tournaments. Tournaments are either for a specific rank only (i.e.. G3,G2, G1 or G0) or are GF, which means they are rank free but they do not count towards promotion to a higher rank.
There must be at least 10 players in a ranked tournament in order to receive points towards the next rank.
You also earn Character loyalty when you play in online tournaments.
Points are gained from each time you play a ranked tournament:
* First Place: 4 Points.
* Second Place: 3 Points.
* Top 20% Place: 2 Points.
You need to gain a certain amount of points within a certain number of rounds (the points are reset after a set number of rounds depending on your grade) in order to be promoted:
* G3 to G2 Promotion: 8 Points or above.
* G2 to G1 Promotion: 20 Points or above in 20 Rounds.
* G1 to G0 Promotion: 30 Points or above in 30 Rounds.
E.g.. 20 points in the 1-20 games, or 21-40, or 41-60, etc.
Why was I demoted?
If you do not score enough points within a certain number of games you will be demoted to the previous rank:
* G2 to G3 Demotion: within 20 rounds you have gained 0 points.
* G1 to G2 Demotion: within 30 rounds you have gained only 2 points or less.
* G0 to G1 Demotion: within 40 rounds you have gained only 2 points or less.
Why can I not book a place in another tournament for a specific length of time?
If you have withdrawn from a tournament - quit or ran out of time - you can not book a place on another tournament until the finishing time of the tournament you withdrew from has past.
NB: It will still count as a game/round if you withdraw from a ranked tournament, so it is more beneficial to stick it out and gain the character loyalty than quit, as you can't enter another tournament in this period anyway!
You can pull put of a tournament that hasn't started provided you do so before the last 30 seconds before in starts!
How do you make your character sleep?
You make the character sleep by pressing and holding the Start button whilst in the lobby.
How do I get a cooler outfit for my Lobby Character?
Outfits, faces, hairstyles, etc, are won from playing official ranked tournaments - G0 to G3, not GF - and achieving a podium placement. There needs to be more than 10 players in a tournament in order for a prize to be awarded, and prizes are awarded to the top 20% of the players within the tournament - e.g.. for a tournament with 10 players there will only be 2 podium places/prizes.
Move around using the left analog stick. You can jump using circle and double jump by hitting the button twice.
There are three methods of chat in Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. To select from a list of prerecorded messages hit L2, if you would like to type a short message with the PS3 controller press R2. The third method is to use a PS3 compatible keyboard. Each of these methods put a different color icon over your head to signify the type of message you are trying to send. A blue pencil is a prerecorded message, a green pencil means someone is typing with their controller, and a red pencil means they are using a keyboard.
Game Modes and Chatting
While in the lobby: You can chat at any time with the people in the same lobby as you are. To bring up a chat log of what's being said, simply press square.
Stroke & Match play: In these types of games you can chat most of the time without any problems.
New Real & Tournaments: In this format, you can only chat in between holes through the scoreboard.
Emotes are done using the right analog stick. Additional ones that can be done by holding L1 while using the right analog stick.
Golf Swing: L1 + Right
Sad: L1 + Down
Shocked: L1 + Left
Angry: L1 + Up
Rotating your character
You can change the position of your character at any time by holding R1 and using the right analog stick. This can be very helpful if you are trying to position yourself correctly on a piece of furniture.
Sending PSN messages
While in the lobby awaiting a tournament you are unable to open the in game XMB(Cross Media Bar). If you would like to bring up your friends list at this time to send and read messages, simply hit the select button.
Stroke & Match play fun
During these two game formats you have the power to annoy your fellow players into playing worse. Please be advised that abusing these tactics can be seen as bad sportsmanship, it is best to use them only occasionally.
There are three things you can do when you are in spectator mode waiting for your opponent to shoot. You can taunt your opponent using the D-Pad of your controller. The content of the taunts vary from character to character. Similarly you can praise your opponent using the Square, Triangle, Circle and X buttons. During this time your character also appears on the screen, you can walk around the screen while your opponent is lining up their shot using the left analog stick.

Slice (ball moves left to right): press the “Left” button when setting the impact.
Hook (ball moves from right to left): press the “Right” button when setting the impact.
Super-slice (ball moves left to right): press the “right” button when you set the power, then press the “left” button when you set the impact.
Super-hook (ball moves from right to left): press the “left” button when you set the power, then press the “right” button when you set the impact.
Actually, Slice and Hook are when you don't get a good impact, and it curls one way or another, i.e. uncontrolled curve. The words you're actually looking for are Draw and Fade - for a right hander, Draw is your 'Hook', and Fade is your 'Slice'.
Also, the two missing balls are Side Spin (+1.5 grades Sidespin, -1 Control), and Infinity (+0.5 grades Power, Control and Spin, -1.75 grades Sidespin, -Rain), plus I think Control also affects the percentage you get on your lie : i.e. a D-rank might give you 92-100% on a fairway, while an A-Rank might give you 97-100%.

Second Edit to say that your shot height is determined by the Spin stat - the higher your Spin, the higher the shot, so if you're having trouble clearing trees with Nick, give him a Spin boost.
Rechecked the whole 'does Control affect your lie' thing - it doesn't, it is just accuracy; what I had been seeing was just the variance due to the club used. The accuracy could explain why Nick sucks though - 1W using Jasmine, boosted to the top of 'S' rank in Control has a range that has three sections, while 1W using Jasmine, weakened to the middle of 'D' rank in Control has a range that has nine sections.
By sections, I mean that the accuracy line you see is like this:
Each time it spreads out is another section, so obviously, the less there are, the more chance of the ball actually going straight.
