Here's something that even I never thought about...

I was having a discussion with a fellow gamer who is a member on these boards and we started discussing about games that get or have gotten overlooked because it was not a part of popular series games like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, etc.  So, I began to think, what games have gone through the cracks and never really gotten great ratings from our ever popular mags and g4tv? And those games where we made all the hype about and then when we got the game ourselves, we did not like it but b/c of the hype given by those same popular mags and g4tv we went right out and bougt it.  One that was mentioned to me was Sly Cooper and the Thievous Racconous (sp),  this game is very addicting.  My nieces have this game and I played the game on demo and I could not put the demo down.  I was going out to buy it but got overwhelmed by Xenosaga Ep. I and other games that I totally forgotten about this game myself.

We say games like Super Busta Move (the one with the baby on the front cover) are stupid but if you really think about it when you play this game it becomes addictive and think also it is a game that you can finish in an hour and put it down and come back to it if you want to "play something right quick".  Another game I feel has gotten underrated was ICO.  It was badly underrated.  I rented it for a week and I felt that it was a pretty good story and the game play was easy compared to some of the games we are commonly used to.  You have your demons, your bosses and you get to save the girl (heh, I'm female but the lead is a male)  And the horns were really cute!  As I am typing this post many games began to flood my mind.  But you get what I'm saying.

The games that were really hyped and I really did not care for were games like the .hack series, I liked the actual story but the repetetive dungeons kind of killed my mojo on this game.  So I quit with it hoping to pick them up again and maybe find something good from them.  How about that SOE?  Really hyped but it was just pure stinky.  I was hoping the engine would have been a little more original and a little separate from  GTA's but oh well.

ICO, Freedom Fighters, and Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter get my vote for being the most overlooked games.

ICO is a masterpiece, even though the game had nearly no dialogue, no musical soundtrack, and the only goal in the game was for you and a mysterious princess to escape a castle. It still managed to have an amazing amount of depth and atmosphere. It truely is a shame this game has'nt recieved the attention it deserves.

Freedom Fighters is a blast to play. The simple Attack, Defend, Regroup sqaud based commands is genious. It was one of the few games I was sad to see end. I think it too was overlooked by the vast majority.

It's funny how Breath of Fire DQ is overlooked, since it is apart of a famous series, but imo it is for the most part. The premise of the game was to play through it multiple times to unlock more of the story, which was unique and made the replay value enormous.

Re: Here's something that even I never thought about...

The first game that actually comes to mind with great overlooked games is oddly enough, Skygunner. This game was incredible. The gameplay was built with extremely incredible precision, quick time reactions, and beautiful landscapes and graphics. It provided enough of a challenge to have you coming back, and a gripping enough story to give you a reason to play. Then came the game's greatest flaw. Those freakin' slowdowns. At times they were so bad you were lucky to be moving at 2FPS. However, like I've said, the game itself is better than that. If you can get past it, Skygunner is a definite must play for anyone, I think. It's funny though since the slowdowns were the biggest flaw in the game, they actually pointed out that "graphical enhancement to reduce slowdowns" or something crazy like that on the box. Oi. Atlus, you nuts.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is STILL overlooked terribly. I tell people that have PlayStation 2's and Game Boy Advances to ditch that Final Fantasy Tactics Advance junk and jump on the Disgaea train. They didn't listen, but enough people did so that it was a bonafied sleeper hit. This game features some interesting strategy RPG elements with a quick play system to not only make battles seem faster, but to make them more enjoyable. The story was great, the acting was solid (at least in Japanese, I haven't ran through in English yet), and the replay was immense.

I'm very surprised Boktai didn't get more attention based on its creator and fresh, original premise. I guess though that gamers would still rather stay indoors than play this solid action title. Ikaruga was overlooked, but no one should be surprised there. This game is incredibly difficult, and a blast to play. But fun, difficult games just don't do well. This is the best top down shooter I've played, and it has some quick reaction gameplay elements with the black/white switching. It's a shame no one played Beyond Good & Evil, because, aside from a couple of clunky controls here and there, this was the best adventure title of 2003 not to include The Legend of Zelda in the title. Viewtiful Joe, although not terribly overlooked, didn't do nearly as well as it deserved to. Originality in games seems to be certain death for the success of that title. I'm hoping the PS2 crowd gives it the kind of sales it deserves.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure was overlooked, but at the same time, I'm not surprised it was. 2000 was an RPG heavy year, and not everyone can play everything, and I'm sure the quirky premise and musical idea didn't help the case. Vagrant Story would be another one. It's incredible depth and difficulty with a great story should have definitely kept you coming back, if you played it. It's really a shame no one played Culdcept. The game was addictive and set up extremely well. It's easily the best card game on any platform, but still, name sells over quality. Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color was a good game. I guess no one was excited about mixing Pokémon with Mario Paint though. It's a shame too. I guess a sequel is in orders, but there's no guarantee we'll see it here. Like others have said, ICO and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter were left without any respect, which is a definite downer, especially in Breath of Fire's case.

Chrono Cross. Alot of people never even heard about this masterpeice, I guess it was lost in the shadow of Final Fantasy IX... which is a shame
,
XenoGears was also very good, yet many have never even heard about it
,
Kessen, what a great game. It was one of the PS2 launch titles, noone ever made any noise about it.

But thos three to name a few.

I guess it depends on the company who makes it, and how much they are willing to spend on advertisment and hype. I know every time I see the Final Fantasy XI commercial I want to go play Commercials go a long way.

Re: Here's something that even I never thought about...

When I got my PlayStation 2 (on launch day), I got it from Media Play, which as only set to get 25 on launch day. Anyway, they forced a $500 package upon the buyers, which included 3 games of choice.

I juggled between:
-Kessen
-Summoner
-Dead or Alive 2
-TimeSplitters
-Dynasty Warriors (not too sure)
-Armord Core 2

Anyway, I got Summoner, DOA, and AC. Within a month I hated hated Summoner (never had such a dis-taste for a game), so I used an online trading site (switchhouse, now merged with half.com or something) and got TimeSplitters (one of my favorite FPS's).

I still regret not buying Kessen.

As for most under-rated game is a game on the PSX called The Granstream Saga. The game was obviously low-budget, which only helped in it's fall. Many people did not see through the low-budget-ness of the game and said it sucked and tossed it aside.

I felt is was VERY original and creative. The music went well with the setting, and the cut-scenes were done in Anime-style with GOOD voice-overs. I think you'll be seeing a complete review of this game in the future.

Re: Here's something that even I never thought about...

Well people generally play the game fall in love with it and then never actually try another game like it, and well become Fanboys. Happend with Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, and Gran Turismo :smileytongue: (all the ones you said) I give almost all games a chance I have thought about this alot and talked about it with other gamers for some time now.

,

Games that are usually big hits have been around for a while and they were first of their kind.

Re: Here's something that even I never thought about...

I thought of making a "forgotten gems" topic as well. Most of my underappreciated games are on PSone though...Blast Chamber, Rollcage, Wipeout...absolutely stellar games (and game series!) that you heard almost absolutely nothing about.
