Re: Summer, the videogame drought season

It seems like the only redeeming quality of the middle months of the year in terms of gaming is E3. That's about the only cool thing that happens in the videogame world during the summer. Actually, that's about the only good thing that happens to videogames in the months of January-September every year. Why is it that all the major gaming releases and events (except E3) seem to happen in the last 3 months of the year? Sure there's christmas, etc., but there's other holidays in the year, too! Not to mention birthdays! For some strange reason everone releases everyting in October-December, every year, and us gamers are left with very little to do during the summer when we have all that extra time (well, the younger ones anyway). Driver 3 (or Driv3r, if you insist) will probably sell hundreds of thousands of copies this summer, even if it sucks, simply because there's not really much else to buy! But then just wait 5 months, and you have to chose what games to buy out of a deluge of about 60 of them.

Why do they do that!?

I personally think it is because, since most of the titles come from Japan, and are released in the "summer"  (I did this because I can't remember if Japan is in the Northern Hemisphere like us and is sharing the same season) and because they so called claim that the conversion to English can take from 6 months to a year that is why we have a drought during the summer.  Now that's just my take.  Is it winter time in Japan during our summer?

Japan is northern hemisphere. But a lot of the winter glut was domestic games last year, so that's not really the thing.

I'm sure it's just marketing strategy. I have no doubt that they have noticed when videogame sales spike and now have it down to a science as to when they should release their games. It's good for them but sucks for us gamers.

Sucks for them too because summer is when people have the most free time to play games. They're a pack of fools if they think I go out and buy every last game I want in the fall and winter when I have nearly zero time to play them. I get very few games from fall to spring regardless of what's been released.

Yes, but unless you buy only one company's games they really don't take that into account. Know what I mean? Some of these company's make one game a year, and they want to make a profit, so they release it when moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas are out buying christmas presents. Unfortunately, that's not the best strategy to have, since there are a lot of people like you, (myself included) who don't wanna spend $300 plus dollars on games in a very short period of time. It is unfortunate for us and in some cases the developers themselves, but it is a sad fact none the less.

But doesn't the Japanese go to school year round?  They don't really have the time either.  (Well maybe its their way of life is set up?

Their school year is longer but not year-round. Also, summer is when most Japanese developers release their "big gun" games. In June Xenosaga 2 will be out there, for example. Summer is also when the FF games usually come out. A new FF won't come out this summer there because of DQ VIII, which is Enix's baby and trumps all Square releases, so FF-XII is being held back "for improvement purposes," which means "for the sake of not threatening DQ VIII sales."
