Importing Profile

I recently bought the Mass Effect Trilogy and I tried to import my profile from Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2 and it wouldn't import.  How do I get my player/character profile to import from the first game to the second?

be sure to get ALL the patches one of them is for importing saves

from ME1 to ME2 so get those updates. (patching requires an internet connection)
