While playing the game I don't just choose one or the other. I do more of what I feel is right in the situation. I was wondering if when you earn Paragon points, it takes away from your renegade or vice versa.

The Paragon and Renegade meters are separate.  Filling one does not decrease the other, or vice-versa. 

Most dialog choice and major decisions represent an opportunity to fit the Paragon or Renegade archetype.  So if you make, say, a Paragon decision, you will not be able to make the corresponding Renegade decision.  I recommend that you choose one for your character so you may unlock the colored dialog options and access more ideal solutions.
