Why the order of release? I thought Metal Gear Solid 4 is Snake's fnal journey so shouldn't I play that last?

In MGS3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker, you DON'T PLAY as Solid Snake. You play as Snake, but not Solid. You'll see when you play them.

It depends on how you want to experience the story.
If you KNOW the difference between Big Boss and Solid Snake, and want to experience the story in chronological order, then you play;
MGS3
MGSPO
MGSPW
MGS1/TTS
MGS2
MGS4
You can play this way if you don't understand the difference between Solid Snake and Big Boss, BUT you need to know ahead of time that starting in MGS1/TTS, you're NOT playing as Big Boss/Naked Snake. You're playing as SOLID SNAKE. Different person, same look. The game will explain why.
And honestly, you can skip the PSP games if you want. They're really not all that important to the story.

Metal Gear Solid VR Missions has to be first!
I remember back in the day, I had just finished Syphon Filter and wanted to play something similar. I heard about MGS so went to Gamestop and the guy gave me VR Missions and told me it was MGS. I took it home and played & played it. I kept wondering how much more training missions I had to do until I unlocked the fantastic game I saw glimpses of in the special features I was unlocking. I completed VR Missions 100% before I got MGS1. So when I began, I was already a badaxx at all the techniques.
