the disk is flawless but the game refuses to play past the opening or past where you meet drebin, i have deleted everything and tried that and even tried playing it without the update. can anybody tell me what is going on?

What exactly happens after you meet Drebin? Does it freeze your console, just the game, black screen, what?

It immediately takes you back to the XMB?
Very strange. I want to say it's your disc, even though there aren't any visible marks. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense though. How long have you had the disc?

i've had it for about a year and a half, its not the disk, i take care of my games, still have all of my playstation one games in pefect condition.

I do too, but back in 2011 I had to get a new MGS4 simply because my disc wouldn't read in-game. Nowadays you can find MGS4 for cheaper than $20. If it isn't a lot of money for you, I'd say at least give it a shot just so you know. If it's the PS3, try taking it to one of the tech forums here.

I have the same problem. It had some moments during Act 1 where it would suddenly exit directly to the XMB. Then I managed to get as far as Act 2 (just before the Vista Mansion checkpoint), but when it went to the loading screen it exited again after a few seconds. Now I can't move on in the game from there because it kept exiting.
Any solutions for this? I played MGS4 using an older CD 2 years back and it worked fine. Bought another CD because I gave the old one away, updated it with the trophy patch, and played it. And here I am.
I'm planning to buy a 2nd hand R1 and R4 version of the game to see if it'll get fixed. I'll post my findings here.
EDIT: BTW, my new copy's the Greatest Hits version.
