Obviously, Spoilers below:
=====
Gonna go out on a limb here and say so far, I like it maybe more than the start the first Spider-Man got off to with Tobey McGuire, granted, I haven't watched any of the first 3 in years. Andrew Garfield plays a great Peter Parker and really pulls off this 'awkwardness' about the character, especially around Gwen Stacey who is well played by Emma Stone. Another big help is that I believe they're in high school as well. Nitpicking but I hate shows/movies that try to present the high school setting and you get pulled out of it by the actors not looking the part. The movie had a more emotional aspect to it which I thought fit well enough, as it was handled rather well too. I enjoyed Peter and Gwen's scenes together, whether they were funny (Peter asking her if she wanted to hang out while not once mentioning what he was asking to hang out to do but her agreeing anyways while he stumbled over getting sentence together) or emotional (her trying to hold back after finding out he's Spider-Man cause she worries that every day her dad goes to work, he won't come back and doesn't want to do that with Peter and also after losing her dad, the scene on the porch).
Although the Lizard's design took some getting used to (the flat face), I thought he sufficed for an 'introductory' villain without bringing in Norman Osbourne right off the bat (I assume the voices that Connors was hearing was a hint at Norman?). Leaves room to introduce him later along with Harry. The fights were actually entertaining, specifically in the way Spider-Man fought (using his webbing to zip line out of harm's way and for the most part, using the webbing to subdue his opponent while climbing over them or just to keep them off balance). I may still have to go watch the first trilogy again but with them kind of vague in my mind, there isn't much comparison for me to do so TAS stands well enough as a great installment/reboot.
For what they used (Gwen Stacey, Lizard) and kept out of the way (Osbourne, Mary Jane) from the start, I'm really looking forward to where they go with this new take in the future. Will they bring in MJ in the next one to get that ball rolling (will have to be someone as likable as Emma Stone or better in my mind) and will they jump right in to Green Goblin? Or will they go with someone else, like Kraven, Hydro Man, Scorpion or Shocker, someone they didn't use in the previous trilogy (think Sony wanted to push Vulture in one of the past ones so they could still do that and maybe have some awesome aerial battle)? I kind of don't want to see Osbourne 'yet/again' and would rather see them pull from Spidey's vast gallery going forward (or put Osbourne in but not as the main baddie just yet). Overall, impressed with this new take.

I haven't seen the movie yet so i didn't read your post but I have this to say..
I've saw a lot of people bashing the movie cause the lack of tobey (ol i know right), but personally just like the comics I envision this spider-man as a different story line (in obviously is) much like different series of comics..
Yeah, I've seen a lot of bashing going on because of the fact that it's a reboot 'so soon', that it's not Raimi's universe, it's another origin story, etc.. People just hating on it for those reasons alone, which I have to say, sucks. I went in not worried that it was a reboot or that it wasn't in the same universe as the previous 3 and loved it (can't say I was all that bothered that it was the origin storyline again, although with a different direction so that helped).
I think if others put the aforementioned stuff in the back of their mind and just went in expecting to see 'Spider-Man', they'd enjoy it.

I can certainly see why people are a little wary about the whole "reboot so soon" issue. I feel the same way with other movies like Superman and pretty much any other franchise these past few years. Overall, everything feels "too soon" and a way to cash-in on movies that aren't even that old. I love how 21 Jump Street made a reference to this and was basically bashing itself and pretty much everything else out there at the moment.
Anyway, I did enjoy the movie but going once was enough. Of course, I'm a little biased and hard to please in the first place. I'm not a fan of anything superhero (although I can tell this stance is starting to change), and I've never really liked Spiderman for some reason. Of all superhero types, he's the last one on my list who has started to do any sort of growing on me. Iron Man, Batman, Thor, and more all have steadily gained appreciation in my mind but Spiderman never really has for whatever reason.
Having said that, I did like Garfield's performance quite a bit. It did seem like he actually tried to make it unique. Also, who doesn't love Martin Sheen? After playing the Mass Effect series, I could listen to his voice all day. Also, Emma Stone is awesome so her presence was enjoyable.
I would agree, Zaku, that the Lizard's face was a tad odd. I would have preferred an elongated nose/mouth. See below (a design based off of the actor Chris Cooper):

Anyway, I'm curious to see where the next few iterations will take us. While I'm not watching as closely as I would for a different series such as the Batman trilogy, I'm still intrigued.

Well, Sony/Columbia Pictures had to reboot it without Raimi and his team to keep the license from falling back to Marvel/Disney (same thing FOX is doing with Fantastic Four and I think Daredevil as well). But for the end result, I really enjoyed it and feel it's off to a great start. How far they go with this one (interviews say they've got 3 planned but could do more) without something happening remains to be seen. So yes, it's a reboot/reimagining, but that doesn't stop it from being a good movie. It just seems like people are out to hate the movie for that sole reason.
Back to the 'hate' thing, I think I'm just in a different mindset. I saw some pretty bad hate for Prometheus as well (the last movie I saw before TAS) and I'm just shaking my head at the stuff I read after I see these movies. An unnecessary amount of hate directed at these movies but whatever. I was entertained/enjoyed them, want to see where things go in a sequel, so for what it's worth, I was satisfied with my viewing. Some people just can't be pleased it seems.
It's a shame that things work like that, in regard to movie rights and such. Everything is so political anymore (I guess things always have been like that, though).
I felt the same way about Prometheus. I think everyone compared it too often and thoroughly with the original Alien film. Yes, I realize that Prometheus is set in the same world as Alien but it isn't a direct prequel, at least from what I've read. Therefore, I don't know why people are so quick to talk about why it doesn't feel like Alien or why it should have been more like it and so on.
Anyway, yes, Spiderman was solid and I'm curious about the future of the franchise.

SpoilerAlso, who was the villain at the end of the film in the little Easter egg clip just before the credits? Forgive my lack of comic book knowledge.
All about the money. The political aspect to the studios is really discouraging at times with stuff like this. Like I know Andrew Garfield has said he'd like to join in on the Avengers and I know fans would love that and I think one of the Marvel Studio guys said he'd love for it to happen but because the properties are with 2 different studios, it's got to all be worked out by the execs about who gets what cut of the profits, where the control is since one of the characters then belongs to another studio and they have their own line of continuity to keep up with, etc.. I would be hopeful that Sony would be on board if asked by Marvel or that they up and approached Marvel with a reasonable deal to have him included but it's going to maybe be hard to do if Marvel is already trying to bring in new characters for Phase 2 (in the upcoming movies for Thor, Cap, Iron Man and new standalones) and then they'd have to find a way to fit Spider-Man in before Avengers 2 happens but I'd think they'd be willing.
I would think it'd be more beneficial to everyone to work things out. Marvel conducts the 'Cinematic Universe' with having all these Marvel properties on screen and in the same world like in the comics but with the studios currently holding properties, it allows Marvel to focus on certain ones (Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc.) while getting some outside ones (Sony, FOX) to help get other properties out there and help build that very universe. I understand that not all the money would be going back into Marvel Studios but all of it's not coming out of their pockets either which would be enough for them to allocate a decent budget to everything they are working on with a little bit extra coming from Sony & FOX's Marvel movies. Marvel would still have to check things to make sure they all match up in the universe and that no one is screwing things up storywise in other movies (I think this is also one of the problems cause it kind of takes control/direction out of the other studios' hands) but it'd be a Marvel fanboy's dream come true to have this constant universe on screen.
I think Ridley Scott messed that up himself. In interviews, he kept saying it was the same universe/timeline, but not a prequel but having seen it, it does feel like they had one foot in the door on prequel, another foot out the door on 'standalone in the same universe'. The Engineers being used was a big driving point for the Alien fanbase on finally getting some answers about the Xenomorphs and they weren't satisfied. It presents a lot of questions still about them but I was just as interested/entertained about the Engineers and where they fit in with the universe so that part of the story was fine for me but a lot of people solely seemed to have went in dead set on 'explain the Aliens/Xenomorphs to me'. I'm actually waiting to see what comes out of this in other mediums (novels and comics) cause I want to see how they start to work in the Engineers with the Aliens vs Predator mythos and flesh out their story.

I liked the movie a lot. Might take another viewing of each to cement it, but I think I prefer it over the original '02 Spider-man.

I just saw the movie, and it was quite good, I found it better the the other trilogy. I liked how they made spider-man how he was in the comics, with that attitute of his, the original trilogy never did that. I also liked the actions scenes, I found them quite well done. Also I found the story well done as well. It also really allowed you to get to know the characters.
Also Emma stone has signed onto 3 movies, so there should be at least 2 more. I suspect there could be more, people who are familiar with Gwen Stacy knows what happens, so I think we may see that in the 3rd movie. I wonder if they will add MJ at some point.
