They do have the weekly special where you can select from a group of movies under a related theme for five bucks to buy. Usually these won't be just-released movies, but they're not always so old that they were released in the time of the dinosaurs.

Then you have movie rentals. The 99-cent collections don't often feature popular movies. There is a number of rentals for $2.99 a piece and some for $3.99. It just depends on what you're looking for and if you can find it for a relatively decent price. If not, the waiting game until a movie does go on sale can happen.
