Doom Metal Thread

83 replies 18 views Edited Aug 9, 2008
Title is somewhat self-explanatory.... the thread for all things doom metal.

What are your favorite doom metal bands?

What style of doom metal do you like best? Funeral? The ambiently styled doom? Or the really heavy downtuned CRUSHING stuff?

Just a couple questions for discussion, have at you!

Well like I was saying, do you think you would lie the ambiently styled stuff more or would you like the really downtuned heavy, crushing distorted riffs?

Personally I prefer the ambient stuff, but I like both.

I'd also like to add I'd consider anything doomy influenced like some suicidal black metal like Gris very welcome in this thread.....

Give me the best of both worlds.

The more extreme stuff (what most of it is) isn't really kinda like Sabbath, but you guys might like Candlemass which isn't really ambient but not overly heavy either.

Evoken is really dark, crushing and HEAVY doom stuff.....

I should mention that Akerfeldt of Opeth did vocals on an album and an EP of Katatonia's, the album is reknowned as one of the best death doom albums of all time, Brave Murder Day.

I enjoy some Sleep and Electric Wizard from time to time. Both have pretty crushing riffs, but some ambient stuff as well. I haven't heard any of their stuff in full, but Sunn O))) seems to be a pretty good Drone/Doom metal band.

SunnO))) is one of the more celebrated drone doom bands, they have a collab album with Boris called Altar that is absolutely excellent.

Funeral Doom and Drone Doom (along with Black Metal) are the only genres that I consider to truly revolutionize the genre.

Speaking of black metal and doom, do tyou know of ANY other bands even somewhat similar to Gris?

EDIT: Message from Conor/amidamaru666:

"Tell Randomhero that Conor said: Candlemass, Cathedral, Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar, Warning (the UK one), and Solitude Aeturnus for starters."
