Bad News for Battlefield 3..

22 replies 64 views Edited Oct 25, 2011

This really doesn't sound good for anyone.. bugs in the MP, and a piece of mud for the SP..

From a JoyStiq reviewer:

Quick thoughts about the Battlefield 3 review

Spoiler

So, I reviewed Battlefield 3.

The times where Battlefield 3 does its damnedest to go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty are the times it stumbles the hardest. But when DICE is doing what it’s always done best, Battlefield 3 is a uniquely mesmerizing multiplayer game with a seemingly endless number of ways to feel like a success.

Man, what a mess. Battlefield 3 might be the biggest game I’ve ever reviewed, and I can’t imagine a way in which the review situation could have gone worse. 3 days to review the campaign and finalized multiplayer is doable. Obviously, since I put a review up. But it’s not ideal.

But less ideal has been everything surrounding the review and Battlefield 3’s release. I won’t dwell on the weird goalpost moving that DICE and EA have tacitly encouraged over the last few days by insisting that console reviews can’t be done because of a day one patch that, I guess, would fix anything anyone could possibly find wrong with the game? That’s practically unheard of before a game comes out, and having reviewed… one, two, three, four EA published shooters over the last two years (Bad Company 2, Medal of Honor, Bad Company 2 Vietnam, and Crysis 2), it was especially surprising here. Put more clearly, EA has never done this with any of the games of theirs that I’ve reviewed. Even Bad Company 2, which I believe also had a day one patch, was reviewed on debug hardware with a near-final version of said patch.

I just think, having played it, EA made some huge miscalculations in aligning it so closely to Modern Warfare 3. It seems obvious to me that they were scrambling to get it done, and they pushed it right down to the wire. I guess we’ll see how things pan out, in that regard.

I think the hardest thing in all of this was scoring my review. Usually it isn’t so difficult, but here, the lows were so low, and the highs were so high…

I wonder if I was nicer to the campaign than I should have been. It’s not actively bad, usually, but it’s nowhere near what I would consider good, or even acceptable, really. And co-op stinks.

I essentially had to write off two out of three modes in the game. It’s a situation where I have to hope that someone wondering about the game who sees the score will read the review and understand what I tried to say. If they skipped the text, saw the score, and bought the game expecting great singleplayer, then yeah. I feel bad about that. For the number, or stars, or whatever, I just looked at the joystiq rubric again and again, going back and forth between four stars and five.

That sounds silly, I know. But I take my job seriously. A four on our scale is a must play for (and I hate this phrase) fans of the genre, a five, a must play for everyone. So eventually I just decided to split the difference. Battlefield 3 is a must play for anyone who likes multiplayer games. So I gave it the four point five.

Is that a cop out? I don’t know. I hope not.

Other things… I wonder why I got a copy of the game when so many other people in the press didn’t. Joystiq is a big, big site, don’t get me wrong, but still. People I greatly respect got shafted, and it’s hard to understand why that would be. I’m hoping I wasn’t selected on the basis of what EA thought I would give the game. That’s the kind of **bleep** that keeps me up at night, figuratively speaking.

Speaking of being kept up at night, it’s late, and I worked all weekend. So I guess that’s all I have to say about it for now.

- Doesn't sound good when a reviewer is second-guessing himself.

Ouch. That's why games should try to be less like CoD and more original, and fun. Devs are trying harder and harder to 1 up CoD but there's just no beating it. Until people realize there's better things out there, people will continue to buy their copy and paste games until it goes out of "style"

Better luck next time though, DICE

Sorry but working on lackluster titles makes people think less of you as a company and more as a sell out.

BF was NEVER going to be good from the moment it looked like MOH, I like MOH don't get me wrong, but I don't like playing the same game twice and that's what BF3 felt like. It felt like MOH, it looks like MOH, It is MOH.

Why couldn't they take the blueprint from Bad Company instead of MOH?

Like someone said, they were busy trying to beat COD, deep down they know that MOH pretty much had CoD's number on graphic and gameplay, but not on content, so they figured, copy MOH, add more content... Doesn't quite work out that way. When you buy BF you want it to be Battlefield. You don't want it to be exactly the same as Medal of Honor in any way at all.

As I look at the Uncharted universe for inspiration for what I could say about BF3. It is pretty much "last years model".

I hate to say it, but MW3 has this game beaten in every possible way. Hell there are loads of shooters which will be better.

So yeah, Dice need to quit fiddling with useless generic titles and go back to what they are good at.

Mirrors Edge.

Unfortunate, I expect BF3 to be better, but with some recent videos of the campaign the story is like a mix of Black Ops and Modern Warfare which isn't very good (Some dumb conspiracy plot with Russians and nuclear weapons), I see that EA's attempt to out do CoD has caused them to fail in expectations. But in the end, I see it for myself when I get the game.

I honestly think DICE should just use the FrostBite 2 engine to make Mirror's Edge 2!

However EA likes to feed on hype.

You were more right than I imagined.

Oh God yes.

Why couldn't they have just applied their new Frostbyte engine to the Bad Company build!?!?

Bad Company was my favorite war shooter experience of all time.

I didn't really like Bad Company, but I could respect that it was different from other FPS games which was a good thing since it wasn't following the normal. I figured, hey, they can start from this game and build more unique interesting shooters every few years. Eventually I would have to like at least one of them. Just like all of us can probably agree we like at least one of the CoD games.

From what I understand, coming direct from Dice, I saw it on the "on-mirrors-edge" forums, Dice does not intend to announce or even confess to having any Mirrors Edge 2 material until late 2013 at the earliest.

Oh well.

Battlefield 4 next year. xD

My gosh Dice and EA have turned into Treyarch/IW and Activision.

I got Battlefield 3 for the PS3 yesterday, and I am really enjoying the MP.  The graphics and sound effects are also top notch.  The only bug that I have run across was mics cutting in and out.

I haven't played co-op or the campaign yet.  Hopefully they are not as bad as the reviewers are making them out to be.

In comparison, how did you like Bad Company 2's multiplayer (if you had it/played it?)
