Third Person is better because I feel like I have more control. Plus I can see around corners, which is insanely useful. Typically I prefer the "Over the Shoulder" view like in RE4, The Order: 1886, and The Evil Within.
First Person isn't bad though. It's being used in horror games and that's where I think it works best. It really puts the player in the game and the player can experience everything from the character's view.
If I'm fighting at range or exploring, I definitely prefer first person. So in Elder Scrolls, where I play as an archer, I'm always in FP view. Also, I feel more personally immersed in the world in first person.
Same goes for horror games. Just makes the experience more intense IMO. If I'm peeking around a corner in a dark hallway, it's more tense than if I'm watching a character peek around a corner.
If however combat is at close quarters, sword-fighting, etc., I prefer third person. Likewise I wouldn't want to play FP platformers. So it depends.
Ultimately, wherever possible, developers should have an option for both.
Mostly I prefer first person. I do switch to third when driving or flying in Battlefield, though. Stealth games and melee-heavy games work much better in third person because they give you a better perspective between your character, the environment, and enemies. I don't think The Last of Us would have been nearly as impactful if it had been first person.
I really like both.
That's why .. Skyrim. LoL
