Japanese Newspaper Claims PlayStation 4 Will Cost About $400

10 replies 112 views Edited Feb 7, 2013

Yes! I can't wait for this news on the 20th on February

What does everyone think about this?!

Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s biggest newspapers, has run an interesting story – translated by The Verge -- indicating that the PlayStation 4 will cost over 40,000 Yen, or about $430/£270/€320.

The Verge puts this into context: PS3 cost approximately 60,000 Yen (nearly $650/£410/€480) in Japan when it launched in late 2006, and as we all know very well, it released at an outrageous $599/£425/€599 at that time

So is this rumored price point good news? Yes, if it’s true. A 40,000 Yen price point in Japan indicates that PlayStation 4 may launch in the west at around $400/£300/€350, or $200/£125/€150 less than PS3 cost in 2006. However, this is all speculation; we hope to have plenty of hard facts following Sony’s event in New York City on February 20, which IGN will attend.

The newspaper report also indicates, according to The Verge, that the PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US in 2013 (no mention of Europe indicates that the console won’t launch there until 2014) and that the DualShock 4 – or whatever it will be called – is “roughly the same shape” as the DualShock 3 currently used with the PlayStation 3.

We’ve reached out to Sony for official comment on Asahi Shimbun’s story, and will update when we hear back.

$400 is better than $500 or $600. I would definitely consider buying it at that price, if it were true.

Think the $400 range is what people were expecting and seems to be the 'OK' price for them to jump on board with all the other rumors about the PS4. Essentially, all Sony has to do is showcase the titles/what to expect, features and give an official price in that range and they're pretty much off to a good start for the upcoming gen.

I'm hoping starting price is at least $349. Most likely it'll be more at launch date for at least a year or more.

$400 seems like a sweet spot for most with the rumored specs.  If they can put it out there for $350 and showing up the competition, more power to them but I'm not sure if they'd be able to do so without taking a loss on the hardware (a big loss in any case).  I think over $450 is the point of pushing it for some.

$400 seems fair considering the Wii U is about $350.  Just need some awesome features and games and Sony can once again return to the dominating legacy it had back in the PSone and PS2 days.

IMO the reason why the PS3 was so expensive is that it used fully custom ized chips and a brand new media format. Since the PS4 doesn't suffer from those problems, it should be much cheaper to sell...

Yeah, CELL & Blu-Ray.  Now that Blu-Ray is a standard format (all 3 now are to be using it or some offshoot of it) and they're going with more PC/standard parts (modified to an extent but not built fully from scratch), they can avoid the high price this time around.

Remember there are rumors that it will be 100% DLC, so no Blu-Ray.  That would be kinda wasteful considering how much effort Sony spent to push the Blu-Ray over HD-DVD.

If it was my decision (I am now CEO of Sony gaming) I would release it for $450 with no drive.  But it has all the other optimal features everyone expects, so it sells like crazy.  Then maybe 6 months later, come out with a USB Blu-Ray module that connects to the PS3.  Or maybe make it wireless and all spacey looking.  It can be in one place while the PS4 is in another.

Then maybe two years later release the slimline version with built-in Blu-Ray.  By then it's selling for $350.  It's $100 cheaper than PS4v1.0 but by then it would be $200 cheaper to produce.
