Washington Redskins trademark cancelled

The U.S. patent office cancelled the football team's trademark because the name supposedly disparages Native Americans. The team can hold onto the trademark as it appeals, however.

What are your guys' thoughts?

The name shouldn't even be a concern, but everyone that missed the civil rights movement would like to have something new to moan about and get attention.

How about:

The Atlanta Braves and The Browns?

Are they going to have to change their names to?

As an Eagles fan, I say  LOL Foreskins

But I honestly think it was a good decision by the US patent office

Someone beat me to it, but I think it's really sad.  It's only because they've been losing.  They even took a pole on this and it passed and no one was offended.  So, what happens to the Chicago Blackhawks now?  You cancel this trademark, cancel all of them.   The difference is, Blackhawks win.  Winning organization!

Sports is suppose to be about good, clean fun.  When they make names like these, it isn't out there to offend nobody.  Changing their name isn't going to help them win!

It's official, our country has become soft!!

The Braves' name isn't offensive their fans are and the Browns are named in honor of Joe Louis, an actual person (specifically his nickname, the Brown Bomber)

Any word/name can be offensive depending on the person. You aren't entitled to say something isn't offensive because you don't speak for everyone. Not a hard concept.

.............. Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say Braves isn't as offensive as "Chief-Noc-A-Homer" or thousands of Non-Native Americans tomahawk chopping and dressing up in Native American garb. It's one thing to name yourself after a Native American warrior, it's another thing to trivialize an entire culture as a character.
