PS3 to Windows 7's Media Center

18 replies 54613 views Edited Dec 27, 2009

I can't seem to link my PS3 to my new computer (running Windows 7 and sorry I am not sure where to see what versions of the media player/media center I have I am not used to all of these icon yet). When I go to Music, Video or Photo  the PS3 seems to recognize the PC (it shows a windows media player emblem and the computer/username)...but when you try to open it and error comes up saying

"Access to the media server is not allowed. It is possible that the system name for this PS3 system, "PS3-XXX", has not been registered. Check the settings for the media server."

So I go into Windows Media Center, scroll down to Tasks and then over to "add extender" it gives a short intro talking up XBOX and then promts me to click Next...so I do and the next screen is asking me to "Enter the 8-digit setup key that is displayed on your TV."

I don't know where to get this key Windows Meda Center asks for. Or if there is a better way to do this? Can anyone help me get this running please?

Apparently not....I'm thinking the windows media player is too new and we need to revert back to WMP 11? But I read through other posts and it seems like other people have it working with 7? Idk...

You have to give permission or "allow" the PS3 to connect to Windows 7... which I've been using since Beta with no issues. (Retail version now and running 64-bit).  Go to "Network and sharing Center" and click "Choose Homegroup and sharing options" then "Change advanced sharing settings..."  Under "Media Streaming" click "Choose Media Streaming Options..." and make sure settings are set to allowed... to see the PS3 (which shows up as Unknown Device) change "show devices on: Local Network to All Networks" and make sure it is set to allowed as well. I've also disabled "password protected sharing" which I've had issues in the past with Vista. Hope this helps.

**Update** Enabled Password Protected sharing and still streaming away so just check your Media streaming options.

I'm haveing the exact same problem (media server shows up on ps3 but does not work). When i go to Media streaming options in wmp12 my device is not listed. How do i register the device if it is not in the list? I can't reinstall wmp12 because it is built into windows 7. I tried disableing it from windows features, then rebooted and enabled it again. Still no device listed. Tried turning off firewall and still nothing. Tried renameing my ps3, still nothing. I know where to look (usually it shows up as unknown device and i can enable it). I'm running out of ideas...any help would be appreciated.
