After 500gb hard drive upgrade

I bought my little boy a 12gb slim and put a 500gb drive in , when it transferred the data it used 60gb how is this possible if the machine only had 12gig to start with , after only 1 day of play it only had 132mb of memory left and I understand that every game you play has game date but why now the sudden 48gig extra it's taken and how can I see where it is allocated . any help on this would be much appreciated.

A percentage of the HDD capacity is reserved for the OS and updates. That's where the extra went. It's normal.

Yes but on the 12gig there is no hard drive to take out and replace so the machine has its internal hard drivre to deal with that surely. Plus i deleted all data and it still only shows 467 gigs out of 500. something's a miss , or I'm too dumb to get it .

No.  If you install a hard disk drive in the 12GB version, the internal flash memory storage is no longer used. A PS3 uses only one system storage device at a time. The PS3 reserves about 8% of the formatted capacity of the drive for system uses. Most of it is used as working storage by the Backup Utility.  If it didn't do that, you would not be able to back up the hard disk drive if it was filled to capacity.

You also have to account for the fact that your 500gb hdd is not actually 500gb. I have two 500gb hdd in my computer and they show up as 465gb.
