And exactly how many disc-based games require the new firmware at the moment? None
All current Blu-ray movies also still work fine.
Finally, the PlayStation Store is part of the PlayStation Network which is not necessarily entitled to the PS3 and merely an additional service.

As much as we need the Blu-Ray player. They are both not essential to playing games, but they were additional features that people took into consideration when deciding whether or not to buy a PS3.
