For the record, "forcing to restore to default" means you have no other alternative. Like when the system is looping "restore filesystem" messages. There is literally no other way to get the system working without restoring and losing everything. :\
And I'm not saying systems haven't come a long way, but there would be no worry about firmware updates on a NES. I'm not so young I don't remember flashing green screens and blowing on cartridges, and sure, I didn't complain when I had to...that's why they had cartridge and system cleaners back then. We managed. But with the PS3, there's no cleaning system or blowing on cartridges fix. There's basically being at the mercy of Sony to fix it, lol.
But I'm not going to sit here and be like URRRGH SONY Y U NO WURK PERFECTLY FUUUUUUUUU and I don't even blame them (too much) about mucking up the update due to lack of testing on multiple different systems, since the sheer number of systems with different parts would be staggering. I'm more upset that they don't just own up to it. If a system is out of warranty and an update bricks it, I can understand people would be upset needing to pay for service to fix a problem that wasn't their doing. I liken it to the three RRoD issues Xbox machines had (although of course, this issue affects a much smaller sample size), and they serviced out of warranty machines for free since it was an issue that Microsoft took responsibility for since it was definitely their fault with the hardware.
Ne1atall: Sorry if I came off as a jerk, I was kind of in a crap mood, and I'm really touchy on the whole subject right now from all the crap I've had to go through for my system. I used myself as an example (owned less than a year, lightly used, never had major issues previously, etc) because it makes no sense to me why it would correlate with the FW 4.0 update besides being affected by the firmware itself.
Frustrated with the whole thing right now, and I'm paranoid as heck I'm going to get my system back from Sony working at first, just to have it degrade into the same problems because they think they fixed it. :[ Bad enough I'm without it for so long, worse to get it back in the same state...

As an update:
Got my PS3 back. Seems to be working so far. But Sony seemed to forget I HAD A 320GB HARD DRIVE. REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Apparently they think slapping a 160gb in my machine would be fine and I wouldn't notice. And the only way to fix THEIR mistake? SEND IT BACK! SUPER FUCKING DUPER.
After calling and complaining, best they could offer me was 2 day air after they were done fixing their mistake. Still 3-5 days to ship it there. So they shave off 1 to 3 days on a process that took them 2 1/2 weeks last time. FML.
As for the system working, it seems my hard drive did start going on the fritz after 4.0, but I still maintain that's not the cause, but a symptom. We'll see how that goes.

I have an older 40 GB "Fat" model (1st generation? I don't know), purchased in December 2007. I have never had a problem with this console before. I have never loaded videos, pictures or music to this console. It has been used only for games, and to watch movies. It has only been used to view movies (in 4 years) an estimated 50 times. This past week (about the 10th of January?), I was playing Battlefield 3 online, and the game started freezing. That, or I would re-spawn with NO weapon! The same started happening with Modern Warfare 3. I did all the standard re-starts, restores, etc, short of wiping the hard drive clean. The console will still play DVD's and CD's, with no problem.
I backed up all my data to a 32 GB memory stick, and installed a new 80 GB Hard Drive. I then restored all the saved data with the memory stick. Everything was working great.
I inserted the Battlefield 3 disc to load the game, and a screen came up stating that an update was required for Battlefield 3. I let the update load, which took about 2 hours...which seemed like a LONG time, but it did load. After that uploaded, the system stated that the game would now load to the HDD. I hit "X" for OK...then the system froze again and the game load stayed at 0%. The game didn't load.
Now, the system won't play any Blu Ray discs, and will not load any games.
All this AFTER I installed a new hard drive. Now what? A new laser? I find it hard to believe I haven't had one problem with this system, then I can't play a Blu ray, or load a game. It seems kind of weird that this happens, with no problems before.
Any ideas? Could it be update 4.00? Now I'm leary to go out and spend another 300 bucks on a "Slim" system, because of all the problems...I really don't know what to do, now.

I have had my PS3 60g (CECHCO3) for some years from new but gave to my young son when I got a new slim it was running on 3.61 firmware as he never played online so never had to update it, but he is at the age now were he wanted to play MW3 with my self and friends. So we tried to update it to 4.00 and it got to 76% and failed so we tried again and did the same at 76% only now we cant get passed the recovery mode.
I have tried every option in the recovery mode an first we got (8002f281) error (HDD).
So i place the hard drive in my slim and formatted and worked fine on the slim but when I put it back in the 60g fat one same thing happened 76% and failed only now we get (8002f1f9)
My son is gutted and so am I as my beloved fat ps3 is now a brick with no fault of ours!
I'm guessing Sony will not hold there hands up as I seem to have read these kind of problems a lot.....
So any ideas as what we can do ? or how to fix this .....Oh I did buy a new hard drive just to check and even that one does the same so its no faulty hard drive.....Please help if you can
Thanks in adavance

Yup mine has done the EXACT same thing after 4.0. But it's a 2.5yr old slim 120gig. was also playing BF3 and spawned with no gun, then hard crash-reboot. No games/BDs will run but dvds will. Someone tell me that it's just a coincidence.

I really can't see how 4.00 didn't cause these issues... I bought my PS3 3 or so months ago. It worked perfect! Played everything I told it to.
DVD Movies? YES!
Blu-Ray Movies? YES!
PS1 Games (both downloaded from PSN & CD form)? YES!
PS2 Games? YES!
Netflix? YES....!
Everything worked wonderfuly it was like heaven.
Updated to the new FW...
Freeze all the time after I play for a few minutes and my XMB Icons blur (The rest of the screen is crystal clear just the individual icons blur to the point they are un-readable. They look like blurry "poofs"
How can it not be the update? I just got the system so it's not "Old" and "Dying" I only play at most 2 hours and then I'm done and shut it down. It worked fine until I updated... Now I dont even bother turning my freaking new PS3 on... How freaking sad is that?
Sony, you can act like a deer in the headlights all you want, whether you admit it or not we still now you're bull-sh&^ing us. Way to keep us loyal.

Yup. I've got a launch 60gb system, freezing like crazy since 4.00. I have tried numerous so called fixes that are floating around out there (ie: reinstall via thumbdrive, restore file system, reformat, etc) and nothing has worked. I did this on the 4.00, 4.10, and 4.11. I even tore down the system and did a complete deep cleaning and freshened it up with some fresh thermal paste, but all to no avail. Switched back to my old harddrive (got upgraded 320gb HDD right after I bought it) and still didn't work. I can only get it to work for a few hours now after I let it sit unplugged for a few days. I have actually seen many people get this problem, who have sent it their system, and still came back screwed up. I just want to know what the **** is going on and why Sony hasn't acknowledged this problem. There are plenty of people reporting this issue. Sure, there probably aren't that many people having this problem, because it's mostly on the older systems, with a few here and there on the new ones, but still. I have a friend who for the first time in a while, actually logged online, and made the same mistake I did, and updated his launch 60gb system.... screwed his up as well. So Its the firmware, not that hardware... Sony needs to acknowledge the issue in SOME fashion. But, Sony has track record of not acknowledging issues with firmware, and even longer track record on responding to issues period. They need a better PR gig, and a better gameplan on recognizing issues(now matter how few they actually affect), communication with those affected, and spearhead someone to find the issue and resolve it immediately.
Obviously, my system doesn't do everything, because at the moment, IT ONLY DOES NOTHING!
