Does anyone else agree that if Sony wants our money they should stop making SECURITY system updates and start making IMPROVEMENTS and ADDITIONS to the firmware? up until about 3.3s i was very pleased with there updates... maybe completely revamp the firmware alltogether?! turn it back into the supercomputer you promised us sony!

no. i want them to make as many security improvements as possible first. lock the system back down completely, then focus on "improvements".

As with every console in existence there will always be hackers trying to open the system. You will never get a system locked down completely if hackers are determined to open it (learn from history or you're doomed to repeat it). You should focus on improvements first to make your base happy, and security second. I feel this new update is a compromise to security anyways. If any malicious hacker compromises PSN it's bad news for anyone signing onto the network. This new update makes viruses possible on the PS3.

of course there will always be hackers trying to get into every electronic device, that's because most of them are too lazy & greedy to develop their own device to do what they want. and, of course, the companies will always fight to keep their devices secure & at the same time, the law allows them to do so to protect their interests. if you havn't noticed, most people on these boards do not like that these hackers broke the ps3 security, so, i'd say the majority is happy that sony is locking down the console again, to protect their interests and the majority of gamers. and since, you don't really know what this new code is all about seeing as you're not a sony tech engineer, all your doing is spreading false info and fear.

For some reason, majority opinion doesn't affect my own. I may not be a $ony engineer, but I am a software engineer, and I know how systems work. So, I will guarantee to you, 100%, confirm with any other engineer you like, that if a malicious person infiltrates the PSN network they can absolutely spread a virus. When you give the ability to run any code you want, malicious code can be run. You need to trust that the person behind the scenes is acting in good faith. None of this info is false, research it and report back my innaccuracies.

LOL, i'm not trying to change your opinion, the point is, is that the majority is happy sony is focusing on security, at least the majority on here that make comments about hacking the ps3. i'm not gonna research it all, i don't care to. If you don't research and learn you'll only end up at your same conclusion. If you think your points have merit then support them. the point is, is that neither you or i know exactly what is in that code or if it can "run any code you want". who's to say that that portion isn't encrypted? The information is encrypted using new keys (not hard to hack) and random variables(very hard to hack). You can someone from within the company turning on the company has been a possibility with every single tech company in the world, this isn't new. it's just you trying to spread fear & rumors. Fear perhaps, but there are no rumors in what i'm saying, so stop saying that.

which, in case, you didn't know, they are doing both right now anyway. they are working on the security all the while working on FW 3.60 to give certain users cloud game save storage. i say certain users, cause right now it looks like it's for ps+ users. which is fine by me, cloud storage costs lots of money.

How do you figure cloud storage costs a lot of money? People like iCloud are giving accounts with up to 100gb for free. Hosting data nowadays is relatively cheap. The expensive part in cloud computing is developing and maintaining the interface, but that shouldn't be over the top expensive.

because it does cost a lot of money. let's see, the initial cost of buying & setting up the equipment, rent for building, electricity, water, payroll, etc. it's not free. brtw, icloud is $100 a year for 100gigs, unless what you've seen is/will be a limited promotional deal, website - http://www.icloud.com/en/features/packages - this is pretty much the same across the board for decent cloud storage, yet sony is going to give it to ps+ users included in the $50 a year. wow, bad sony, huh? here's another link talking about the cost of cloud storage - http://www.nasuni.com/news/nasuni-blog/cloud-storage-isnt-cheap-how-the-price-of-cloud-storage-compa...

You got me on this one. Free storage is only 3GB. So how many gigs of save files does any given person have?

couldn't tell ya, i could tell you how much i have, but i'm not everyone. it also hasn't been said what will be allowed to save on there, it's 100% unknown if it's just save files or not. either way, it's going to be free to ps+ users. i bet you're the kind of person that only had bad things to say about sony when they gave us all a free 3D blu-ray player with an update, when no other blu-ray player company in the world was willing to do that. anything to make 'em look bad, huh? I'm the kind of person who didn't have anything to say, I don't have a 3d tv. Any time when you want to quit the labeling me and attacking my character (a person you barely know and are now spreading rumors about) and get into the substance of this discussion would be nice.

the point is, they can never please 100% of everybody all of the time. if people have a problem with that, then they're welcome to bring out their own product that does what they want them to do.

Or they can not update. Or they can make a true CFW with no $ony code (not illegal).

good, i don't want these people to update. they can sit back and play with their homebrew and their mario emulators, who cares? they can make true CFW all they want and that might not be illegal, but getting it onto their ps3s is where it becomes illegal seeing as they have to circumnavigate sonys security to get it on there in the first place.

If you use $ony's flashing program but use 100% of your own code then you're not bypassing security you're getting accepted by it. Bypassing the HV is circumnavigation, porting your code to a $ony acceptable format is fair game.

we'll have to wait on the full outcome of the otheros case before this can be verified.

OtherOS exploit bypassed the HV. This is circumnavigation.

***THERE IS NO ROOTKIT***

All of this "rootkit" bulls*** is spread through paranoia, disinformation and hackers trying to woo people into their side.

This is an improvement of the Hypervisor, which scans your system for any arbitary code that may indicate your PS3 is running hacks and cheats and then sends Sony the info to make a decision to ban your PS3. MS uses the same system to ban hacked OtherBoxes from XBL.

Violate the Terms, get the banhammer. Simple.

Perhaps rootkit isn't the best word, how about back door or remote system? Either way, it's $ony running anauthorized code after signing into PSN. If you don't think this is a security concern then research why the first $ony rootkit was a failure.

so how is it any different than what MS does with their console for years? are there cases where some hacker has stolen a box user's information and bricked their console?

It's not, and there hasn't been to my knowledge. Regardless, I don't put a lot of personal faith in the man behind the curtain.

or s it just evil because sony's finally deciding to implement this idea and you're worried that hackers won't be able to continue to use illegal software on their PS3s?

Zig, you need to stop all the flame-baiting. Keep it up and i'm going to report every post like this to the mods.

LMAO! there's about as much flame-baiting in his reply as there is in you putting a $ in front of "ony"...

You've stated you're an engineer (ME?). Do you understand what these hacks are doing, what the proper terms are for these hacks, and the difference between the hacks? You should know the difference between going through security and bypassing it.

yees, but i'm a structural engineer. and, yes, over the last 6 months, i have educated myself pretty ell on all of this stuff. i've got multiple accounts on the hacking websites, i've even gotten a password for a private irc channel as well, so yes, i know what's going on.

but, personally, you might want to re-look at the DMCA laws and see what it says about the term "circumnavigation".

and, for now, i'm done with these discussions with you as it's just a roundabout debate.

Well done, but PS3 hacking sites won't tell you how to program, although it might tell you how to run a script. Congrats on idling in IRC, it's a good first step. Now, become familiar with exceptions 1,3,5 and 6 in the DMCA. If those don't apply then the Geohot issue is moot. Or don't reply, whatever :-p
