Ditto.
Im still on 4.30..... the fixes/improvements on 4.31 don't justify the update.... that and the fact that its an optional update.
I only do the mandatory updates which is an all inclusive from all previous updates anyway.

Mine suffered the same problem, no repair ideas yet.

alot of posts huh? ONly 4 pages in this thread and only half the posts actually had this happen.... Ya SO MANY people had this happen outta the millions (or billions) of PS3's in use today. *cough*

What happened with mine is it was outputting to the normal composite video cables. I thought something was seriously wrong with it until I dug out the cable that came with it and tried that rather than my HDMI cable.
uhhhhh what? You were using a hdmi and it outputted to the RCA / A/V / composite (the older cables with red and white audio and yellow video) connections? Not even sure what you said in the start there....
Now if you were already using a composite cable..... (not the 5 plug component), why in the hell would you bother digging out the cord that came with the PS3? IT"S THE SAME THING. I got my PS3 320 gig bundle last year and it came with the same A/V cable the PS2's came with.

Bought a brand new 500gb PS3 Slim bundle pack with AC3 the weekend of Black Friday. Everything was FLAWLESS until 4.31, now it wont read discs or blu rays. Started to look around for possible updates/hotfixes and found A LOT of other people are having the same issues.
To suggest that it is mere coincidence is dodgy. My PS3 isnt even a month old... I've played it a total of 60 hrs max, if that, and everything was perfect on AC3, Tekken Tag T2, Resident Evil 6, N4S: Most Wanted, until I was prompted for 4.31. Now it wont recognize there is a game/blu ray, just shows the disc read icon then stops. Even if it were coincidence... and I just had bad luck with faulty hardware/blu ray lens... and its just coincidence that MANY others are having the SAME EXACT issues AFTER 4.31... Thats a whole lot of coincidence, dontcha think?
Either way, It's just sad to see that so many are helping Sony deny ANY kind of actual help. >.< Good thing Best Buy extended their return policy... going to back up data on PS Plus and get a new console today. I will not be updating the PS3 to 4.31 at first, then I will update to 4.31 JUST to see if it'll harm the system again for shiz~n~gigglez (Best Buy extended return purchases until the end of Jan 2013
) So I will update with findings, hopefully all goes well... otherwise that'll be x2 "Faulty Blu ray len's/drives" in a row... which could'nt be coincidence, right? Nahhhh!...... LOL

I do know that people have reported PS3s bricking and getting the YLOD after each firmware update (and certain game releases), but IMO there isn't a real pattern especially when you are dealing with millions of consoles.
This issue didn't happen by itself, you caused it because you interrupted the upgrade process. You probably should have sought advice about this matter with Sony prior to doing anything hasty.
But like I said before, you didn't even have to perform this upgrade. It was completely optional, and you should have been more careful about how you handled it...
"Mine worked fine so you must be the problem" is your advice? The guy (or gal) is obviously well versed in hardware troubleshooting and effecient technical writing. Look how he clearly describes the initial issue and every subsequent step using layman terminology even someone like you could understand.
Why we should install this optional update:
Many apps like Crackle, PS Home, and Netflix require update: http://techblog.netflix.com/
The worlds foremost PS3 expert says you should: http://community.us.playstation.com/.../38668061
Maybe the update contains something usefull, documents a known issue, or makes your system safer as explained in the patch notes: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps
"New for 4.31: An issue that freezes the game screen has been observed in some PlayStation®3 format software. This version of the system software addresses this issue."

Hey, if you want to fix your ps3, better send for servicing or exchange. But here is a way to fix it.
1. Hold the ps3 power switch until you hear one beep. Keep holding it until you hear a second beep(which resets the video setting).
2.Keep it holding until it is 5 beeps (at one point the LED will become red then green again).
3.If you did this correctly, you will go into the ps3's safe mode(or recovery mode).
You will have the option to fix any corrupted data and also update your ps3 again.
4.Try choosing the update option to re-update the 4.31. I recommend downloading it to a pc, then updating from a flash drive.

Hi, My ps3 ceche01 back/comp. stoped reading all discs after the 4.31 update and as it's out of warrenty I checked the drive and found out something odd.I changed the drive with another one (good drive) as I know the drive board is married to the drive, when I put the other drive in it still didn't read disks but ,when I put the original drive back in it reads perfectly until I turn the system off or restart it.I have tried this 3 times and each time the drive reads perfect until restart. That tells me the firmware update is not compatible with the hardware on the drive. Thanks

i have mentioned in a couple other posts that i have found that 4.31 update would corrupt the drivers on certain ps3's as i could use a E3 flasher and revert them to 4.30 and can actually see the files while the flasher is connected and they would work like new but most just blow it off but i have did it on 2 units and both of them where also e01's and your experiment just confirms it even further...maybe the new 4.40 FW will correct the issue with others having this problem but i am doubting it...
