Numerous people (including myself) were curious if you could install cross region system software updates (firmware) on your PS3 without damaging it, and me being my curious self and having some time to kill, finally put that question/concern to rest. Some people went as far as claiming it would damage your console if you installed another region update. I assumed since the PS3 is open region, Sony would have no reason to region "lock" their system software updates. I assumed each update from each server would be identical.
I downloaded the latest system software (v2.80) from the US, UK, JP, and SA servers and hashed them. Turns out my theory was correct and they all match a MD5 hash/checksum of: d69362743142953be7cb44a5fd5cc888
The download URLs were all identical as well (except for the US, UK, JP, SA which of course distinguishes the region server).
You can safely download and install any update from any region without the fear of damaging your PS3 system because they are all identical. Even if the updates weren't identical you would think the PS3 would check for integrity before attempting to install and pop-up with an error if you attempted to install an update from another region but that's not the case since they are all identical. And to all of you who think the PS3 doesn't hash the update data before installation; you're wrong. I downloaded v3.00 and purposely changed the hash (by modifying the file) and while the PS3 was copying it to the hard drive it came up with an error saying the data was corrupted thus confirming it does check for integrity before installing.
Also, those of you who recommended Sony giving a hash with the update so you can verify it yourself, looks like I've accidentally stumbled upon it myself... It's in the URL! I highlighted it for you, the cyan is the date the update was released and the green is the MD5 hash! I'm not sure if anyone has discovered this before me, I wouldn't doubt it since its right there staring you in the face.

Heard that the asia firmware update has a few extra features dont remember what they are but I think there listed in the ps3 manual.
And have you tried to install one of these updates from another region do you want to risk damaging the ps3 doubt sony will fix it if it does stuff up.
The hashes are identical so there's no risk in damaging the PS3, the files are identical.

I will believe you when you install an update from japan.
Oh please, spare me... Even if I did install a Japanese update successfully you'd still doubt me. I inform you the hashes are identical therefore there is no difference, you doubt it. If I were to inform you I successfully installed it, you would doubt it once again. I don't know what more I can say since I can't get my point across to you. Shall I record my Japanese installation so you can call it a fake as well? A thanks for your input, your time, or enlightenment would have been nice but I guess I just got disbelief from you (which I guess is better than you simply not caring). I said what needed to be said up above, I wrote it to inform the Playstation community and I feel I've done that and I'm leaving it at that. Believe me or not, it's up to you.

Well some people just can't handle the truth.
It's a shame they're not different, would of given some of us something to ponder. I will mention one thing tho, I've got a **bleep** PS3 and on the Settings Menu just under System Update I've got an item Edy Viewer. Would that be there from day one and never updated, or in every update just only visable on a **bleep** console?

It is true that all the firmwares from different regions are the same. i have been updating using the USA region on my EU PAL PS3. my EU region gives out the latest firmwares a few hours to a day late. and there is truth that Japan region consoles get a few extras with the firmware. But its also true that all those features are included in all the firmwares, but the firmware picks during installation whether to insall those features or not dependng the REGION of your console. If you have a Japan Ps3 you will get those features regardless where you downloaded the firmware from.
And to those who do not believe, try it yourself. if you are not willing to try, then please donot challenge the possibility of this truth without even putting an effort to see it for yourself.
