Yea... 4.21 worked for one day and now my problems are back in full force...
So does reformatting the HDD work? Is this confirmed?
I'd rather not lose all of my data if it doesnt.
Thanks

**bleep**. 10 minutes later after 4.20 update my ps3 went it to safe mode 07/07/2012. im a firm beliver that if we unite and put sony on the news
and televise it. sony will have no choice but to answer for there actions. if this update is responsible. then they have no choice but to replace or repair the units. my unit was working fine it was rite after the update it shut off. now i can even eject the mk game out!!!.

Def. sound like it is not a firmware issue but rather an issue with corrupt date for you djchu. Try putting your system in safe mode and selecting option 3. To do this start with your system in standby with the redlight on. Hold the power button down until you hear 3 beeps. on the third beep the system will turn off. Once it turns off release the power button and repeat the same process. This time the third beep will be a quick double beep. A message should pop up saying to plug your controller in with a usb and to press the ps button. Once this is done select option 3 and follow the on screen prompts. If that doesn't work i'd say reformat your ps3 through the system settings menu, you can do quick format which takes minutes to complete or full format which can take hours. Hope that helps you.

@ tahoe-ryder
Chances of it actually being the updates fault are actually pretty small. If you search any firmware update you will see similar posts claiming the same thing. You also get a lot of < insert popular game > broke my system when a new popular game gets released.
Not saying it isn't possible, just saying its probably the least likely explanation.

I've already done that... twice.. or else I wouldnt be here, except for formatting as I went through that once and it blows. lol
I'm running a stock 250GB Slim and I know of other people who have a 250 GB citing the same issues and then this I read this article
and it sounded about right. I can still turn on my PS3, albeit I can't do much so I'm trying to look fo a solution before I'm completely locked out.

a lot of us are here because of update 4.20.
i know a lot of people say the updates crashed their consoles, but in this case it appears to be true.
why else would they release a stability update just days after?
Im an old man lol. I was ready to just thrown mine out and chalk it up to old age, but a friend put me on to the whole 4.20 update crashing thing, and Im telling you, there is no doubt in my mind that Sony screwed something up.

Ok fellows, at last I found the solution for this big issue at least for all those people which the PS3 is trying to do the 4.20 firmware update.
Before to gave to you this workaround I have done a deep research and trying to recover the PS3 in several ways none of the alternatives works at least only one: Formatting the PS3 HDD.
Before to start make sure to download the latest PS3 firmware (4.21) from this link.
Get an USB flash drive and create the following directories:
PS3 --> UPDATE
Make sure to crete the directories on Capital letters and keep the PS3UPDAT.PUP file on the last directory (UPDATE).
Here are the steps:
1. Forget about your save games, data, pictures, etc. You have lost all the information from your PS3 HDD (this is the most hard part).
2. Get a screwdriver, then get out the blue screw from the bottom back part of your PS3.
3. Pull the HDD case from your PS3, the case has a handle to pull.
3. Carefully get out all the 4 screws from the PS3 HDD case.
Here are some examples:
4. Get a SATA Enclosure and connect your PS3 HDD.
5. Connect the enclosure to the PC using Windows.
6. Once your HDD is recognized by Windows go to My PC --> Right click --> Manage
7. Once on the Computer management console go to Storage --> Disk Management select the Volumen that you desire to format.
8. Right click on the Volume --> Format.
9. A pop up menu will show, select type as NTFS and formatting level low.
10. Wait until the HDD is successfully formated.
11. Return the HDD to the PS3 HDD case and put all the screw on place.
12. Turn on the PS3 and connect the PS3 Sixasis controller using the USB cable.
13. The PS3 will recognize your HDD and will ask you to format the HDD, select yes and wait until the HDD is formatted again.
14. Once the HDD is ready now, the PS3 will ask your the latest PS3 firmware that you previously downloaded to your USB flash drive.
15. Wait until the firmware update is complete ....
And voila your PS3 is back to life again!!
Let me know if you guys have any problem with this workaround I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks!!!!!
I it worked for me. I put in another drive i had. updated to the 4.21 and it is working perfectly.(my system crashed after 4.20) now all I have to do is try to recover my saved games.
I called Sony earlier today and they wanted to charge me $166, oh but that did include shipping...
Suck Sony, Suck it long and suck hard!!!
