You sure it's not one of those games that started out as a prequel but as developement progressed they changed it to something else? I remember Bioshock 2 and Metal Gear Rising went through that.

Plot-holes don't necessarily ruin a story. And especially not if it's a work of satire, a comedy playing for laughs.
Can an inconsistency wound a film like Inception? Yes. Austin Powers? Probably not.

First off, not EVERYTHING was changed. You still have a snarky, anime-esque protagonist wailing on demons with various types of swords and guns.

Secondly, DMC games are ironic, often parodical games that mock yet embrace the tropes that inhabit anime and the culture that surrounds it.
The Austin Powers films are ironic, certainly parodical movies that mock yet embrace the tropes and patterns seen in "Spy" films such as 007.

So yes, the comparison is valid.

Just a few  plot points like the whole him being an Angel/Demon thing Oh yeah and he doesn't know his mother

Those 2 things certainly aren't relevent in the other Devil May cry games

DmC was way more fun than the rest of the devil may cry games were, I just wish it was longer. It also sucks how terrible they made dante in this game.

Also getting into the bit about his mother, if this were really a prequel his mother would look like Trish because that's the whole reason Dante saves her in the first game

If the writers care that much about consistency in the series, then it's only a matter of time before they play the "selective amnesia" card. Worked for Wolverine in X-Men and Cloud in FFVII... (Although I supposed his memories were spliced with another.)

Why are people ignoring the elephant in the room? You know, the fact that Mundus was the main villain of DMC1 and had never met Dante and was originally beaten by Sparda? It's a reboot.

Just buy Devil may cry hd collection which comes with the first 3 games....Couldnt tell you which one has the best story by todays standards...I would look up review on youtube or ask around..
