16GB card showing only 14GB usable

5 replies 4682 views Edited Dec 26, 2012

I had a 4GB card that only showed 3.5GB usable. That's understandable because of reserved system memory and the whole measurement accuracy debacle.

But I put in my new 16GB card and its only 14GB? Now, 2GB missing is a bit much to be reasonable... especially for this overpriced memory.

I had backed up my 4GB card, then restored the games/saves onto the 16GB card. Would that have anything to do with it?

Well yes and no, but that's how all memory cards go.

A 32GB card, you'll find only has about 28-29 usable.

Why?

Manufacturers go with a base 10 system (so to them, 1000MB=1GB), when in reality, it's 1024MB=1GB

Since they do this to EVERY byte size (so 1000B=1KB), typically the actual amount you receive in any memory capacity is about 10% less than advertised.

My 250GB PS3 only has 232GB available for the same reason.

Yeah I've seen the memory measurement debacle before, its just that I've used plenty of 16 GB memory cards and it never is off by 2GB much. Maybe a GB at most.

A 32GB micro SD card in my phone shows up as 29.7GB usable. Now, thats roughly 2GB give or take not there.

But this is 16GB, thats a 16GB (16000000kb~) difference from 32GB and its shows the same size difference.

The same happens with the PS3 drives too, although according to articles online, hard drives are universally worse than memory cards when it comes to advertising sizes. But I also just think Sony's database in the partition when formatted for their systems just scale far too large. That should be accounted for in the price.

--------------------------
For example, if I calculate the advertised size vs the actual size - the 16GB card SHOULD be 14.901161193847656GB.

That's almost an entire GB missing from the card that Sony uses for system memory. Not memory advertisement differences.

But when its a 4GB card, the card SHOULD be 3.725290298461914 but is only 3.5GB available. That makes sense, with 0.2GB dedicated to the system.

Bumping up to a 16GB card and 0.9GB gets dedicated to the system? Eh. I just think it's not right for the consumer. I find the reason why Sony went with proprietary memory and the prices they gave these things to be okay, but this just adds one too many straws to the camel's back.

Well, I believe when it says 14GB usable, its rounded (down)

Delete EVERYTHING off the 16GB card, open content manager, and see how much "Free Space" is listed (it lists in MB)

Just see if its' closer to 14.4GB or so

Does it get rounded?

I may try that just to see when I get a chance.

I believe it does, because it never shows any decimal points.

It only shows the exact storage space when content manager is open.

Because if I remember correctly, when I had my 4GB card in it, it said I had 4GB (which I obviously didn't, I had like 3700MB or something)
