Oh god I'm so happy to have found this guide! My playstation drives me up the wall!!! Today, I tried playing for the past hour, so far it froze about 6 times on Battlefield 3... I'm gonna start with a new power supply. If that doesnt work, I'm moving on to the fan upgrade. Finally, I'll be able to play without it failing on me.. I'm so excited!!!

I don't think that is the right move. Since you are already seeing issues with your PS3, you should first have your thermal paste and thermal pads replaced, then the fan, and then the power supply. If you weren't having any issues, replacing the power supply first is OK.

If you read my OP, it isn't updated with the latest information. Please click the link below for the latest information on keeping your PS3 cool...

How much would it cost to have a Professional change the cooling fan in my PS3? I could prob do it myself as it doesn't seem too difficult at all but I really don't have money to replace my PS3 if I did screw it up somehow. Also wat would happen if the technition I hired to replace the fan screwed up the PS3? Would I get compensated for his incompetence or would he just say sh*t happens?

Replacing only the fan will cost you $30, but since you apparently haven't changed your thermal paste and thermal pads I would recommend you have that done too. That service will cost $50.

The best deal EE has is that they will replace the fan, change the thermal paste/pads, and also replace the power supply and improve the airflow to your system for $100. This is called their component upgrade package.

In the unlikely event that EE broke your system performing these upgrades I am sure they would compensate you with a system of a simular model...

Is it true that the SSD's run cooler than the HDD's? I want to put a 160 gig SSD in the ps3 because of the performance boost but if it actually runs cooler than a traditional HDD than that would be more of a reason to do so. My ps3 is in the basement so i haven't had cooling problems yet (i think). Only issue is it will flash black every once in a while, guy at a repair shop said its the bridge chip i should re paste my ps3.

Is your PS3 in a well ventilated area with a relatively cool ambient temperature?

I think so too. If it's not even 5 hours old it shouldn't be doing that. Exchange it.
