I've already taken it apart, and I believe that the heatsinks are making contact. I duuno if it was because I took it I applied new thermal compound, or the change of location but the PS3 does stay on level 2 for some time but goes to level 3 after 30 minutes of play.

That sounds fairly normal to me. After a while the CPU & GPU are going to get hot and stay that way. You will just want to make sure the PS3 is able to maintain a normal operating temperature...

IMO I don't think they help. I think it is far better to implement the tips I suggested....

Well, the PS3 never feels hot or anything. Even the back only emits warm air at best, but when the fan is loud, the back is usually pushing out cool air which is strange to me.

Why is the PS3 pushing out cool air and on level 3 fan speed?

My guess is that the temperature sensors detect that the chips are getting hotter and is kicking the fan into a higher gear, however the heatsink is not in firm contact with the chips to draw the heat away effectively. Like I said earlier it is difficult to put that heatsink back on effectively with your model, you might need to have a place like Gophermods do it for you....

I'd rather not have to spend money on such a simple process. Do you have any info on how to properly put on the heatsink for this model?

I'm afraid not, I suggest you follow this thread for more details on your situation:

I did all three of the tip in this guide and all I can say is, AMAZING!! My 80GB MGS PS3 (now 500GB) has never been this cool or quiet, even brand new.  If you have a B.C. PS3, do it a favor and do all the steps for "Cooler Running and Greener".

I guess that I will try that and hope it works, seems like a strange fix to me but then again, the problem is also strange.
