The problem with that is the guy who signs on most likely isn't going to be the guy who stole it. Most stolen goods are sold within the first 24 hours.
The other problem is that how do you prove it's yours, and how do you prove he stole it? Anyone can say "hey, that guy stole my PS3".
Sony isn't the FBI, KGB, or Her Majesty's Secret Service. They're not in the business of law enforcement. All you can really do is file a police report, and then if you have insurance file a claim.

Why would you bump a thread that was originally started in 2007?

They're new technology!
If you have PS3 cardboard box with serial on it in the storeage room. have the serial nbr to the police and then call sony they can WHOIS on them to get IP address. (They don't suspending the account as long they get the police report paper from the fax), Once they're are done with WHOIS, they gave the IP to the police and then police can contact FBI computer crime specialist to trace the IPS (Internet Position System), once the FBI get search warrant if they're in other state or FBI informed the police they located a console thief's local (in your state area) land address (much easier faster than FBI's search warrant that take long time in other state to be busting in).
Once the police or FBI caught them. they would edvince your console for awhile after the court are done, console will be returned to you.
Police dept don't have a computer crime specialist, so the FBI taken care of it.
