Yes and no.
Yes the 20GB, 60GB, and the older 80GB model can play PS2 games
The 40GB, Newer 80GB, and the 160GB model currently can't play PS2 games.

its funny how soon we will be playing dreamcast games on ps3 but not ps2 games whats up with that i hope sony fixs that theres some ps2 games that i want to play like metal gear solid 2 and 3 all three of the grand theft auto series max payne 1 and 2 and others i cant think of also wish we could play psp games but i think im asking to much but the logo says does everthing so i hope i file my taxes too lol

The 1st and 2nd generation PS3s were fully backwards compatible for both PS1 and PS2 games. The 2nd generation however was partially software based for PS2 games instead of hardware based which makes PS2 games playback limited.
