The more you use a hard drive, the quicker it will die, of course, but you probably play games from your hard drive on PC, right? I'm sure your PC is doing well. Even if you don't, the hard drive is constantly in use, anyway. The same applies to your PS3. I have more than 150 games installed on my PS3, and it is running just dandy. I'd pay no attention to this thought.

and when it does die is there a way i can get all my games off of it to another hard drive?
If it's dead enough that you can't boot into XMB, you'll be unable to backup any data for use on the PS3.

you should backup your games and data before your hard drive dies, but it took my PS3 6 hours just to backup 200GB of data
if I knew I would always have a fast internet connection, I would just re-download my games if needed

Your PS3 hard drive isn't going to die any time soon due to a large library of digital games.
