HDD question (not about one comming with PS3)

13 replies 25 views Edited Jun 10, 2005
ok, im one of those people who are happy the PS3 is not comming with, the hard drive. Id much rather buy a 200 gig of my own rather than a,predefined 40 or 80 gig. However, has it been confermed that we wont, need to buy a offical Sony hard drive with its own format disk? (Such,as the FFXI + HDD Combo) or will we be able to use any 2.5 inch HDD? I,got 4 2.5 inch HDD's not being used right now from my previous job and,I would love to use one of those.

I'm not sure, but it makes sense for Sony to make you buy their HDD. That way they make most of the money.

sony doesn't make HDD for PS2 or PS3, i'm not even sure if sony makes HDD for PC.   they use seagate or maxtor(i think) for PS2 HDD.

I'm sure they use at least maxtor, cause I've got one in my comp.

so....because YOU have a maxtor drive...that's what sony uses for their console drives?

It would make much more sense for Sony to go with Western Digital, what with WD making the most reliable hard drives, and all.

Yea really. Maxtor sucks big time. I've had two. The first went south quick. I had a second and thinking the first was a fluke I was quickly proved wrong as the second one went south after about 6 months.

,

None of the WD drives I've ever had went bad on me.

,

Better be able to put a WD in the ps3. I don't want any maxtor crap.

Upgrade today? Why when this banner looks so cool?

I've got a 10gig Seagate Barracuda, and it has lasted me a really long time...it was the original in this PC, it's probably 5+ years old now.

I know a guy who did a lot of work with different Half-Life modifications, and he had a Seagate that literally fried on him. He eventually ended up being able to replace the parts that toasted and made it work long enough to transfer the files onto a different drive...but ever since that happened i've been a bit leary about putting too much trust in any HDD...
But i've seen very few other problems with Seagate or Western Digital drives, and when I eventually get a PS3, i'll probably put my seagate into it (assuming it's compatible.)

I mean...come on...what can I possibly fill up 10 gigs with on a PS3 that i don't have on my PC to fill it up with?
