Had my PS3 in an enclosed cabinet, now I'm experiencing problems

[ Edited ]

Had my PS3 in an enclosed cabinet, now I'm experiencing problems. I did it before awhile back and it overheated really fast, and I quickly took it out. Now my brother has done the same thing, I have no idea how long he had it in there, and it's messing up now. It won't read my discs unless I wait for a long time. But once I start playing the game it freezes after awhile and won't read it again.

What's wrong with it?

Should I get a new PS3?

Or should I keep it of for a couple of days?

Word of advice: NEVER put a computer-type technology that requires air for cooling/ventilation in an enclosed area.

This restricts the ammount of air the console/computer has access to, and the hot air it pushes out has nowhere to go, and will be sucked back into the console (which causes overheating, and in the case of the Xbox 360 the RRoD & the YLOD in the PS3).

If it has to be in an enclosed spot, try to make sure it has enough air space as possible, such as removing the back portion of your entertainment center to create more ventiation for your machine.

I know, after I had it in there the 1st time I told everyone to never put it back in the cabinet and turn it on.

I might keep it off a few days and see if it starts working again, if not I might need a new game system.

Enclosed and confined spaces are magnet traps for dust. So I'd also recommend vacuuming out all the vents on your PS3.

I'd check the Blu-Ray drives. I have a bad feeling the plastic parts (which can deform at elevated temperature) could be warped.

The heat may have damaged the disc drive...It may need to be examined.
