***Hawk's annual GOTY thread:2012 edition**

[ Edited ]
9 replies 297 views Edited Dec 24, 2012

Intro) Fellow gamers, I present to you my annual Game of the year (GOTY) thread. I've been doing this for a few years now, because I think it's important to reflect on the good games that were released during a specific year. That's why I try to put as much detail into this as possible. I really want as many people as possible to participate.  I don't really do this so I can post my own picks, I want as many of you to post yours. So, I ask that you think carefully and pick whatever Playstation game you want to.

First, the rules or basic guidelines:

1) All picks have to be Playstation only. They can be for the PS3, PS Vita, or PSN. PS3 versions of Multiplatform games can also be included. But you CAN NOT, repeat CAN NOT list a game that's exclusive from another system. This is more the forum rules than mine, but we must all follow them.

2) All games that you pick must be games that were released this year. You can't pick a 2011 or older game that you just happened to buy this year. Your pick has to be a 2012 released game.

3) No, you don't have to have beaten a game in order to pick it. If you played it a little or know of a particular game because of the review, that's enough. I'm only asking that you be informed enough to pick. That's all.

4) You have a choice on the format. You can either do a traditional GOTY list by catagory or you can do a top 20-50 list. You can do both or just one, it's up to you. I do ask that if you do the list-only option that you at least select 20 games at minimum.

5) I encourage positive discussion. if you see someone else's pick and would like to comment, please feel free to do so. Agree or disagree with the game pick, but do not be rude about it. Everybody's entitled to their opinion and that should be respected. But calling someone a name because you disagree with their pick is wrong. So, don't do that.

6)  Please keep in mind that you have a lot of time. I figure that you can pick 2012 GOTY choices all the way until the end of January. So your not being rushed to pick now. Reply when you feel confortable. Read carefully, think, and then reply.

7) Finally, feel free to add catagories that aren't listed. I might have missed something and if you think of something new, please feel free to add the catagory to your list.

Here's is the catagory list and some explaination:

PS3:

PS3 GOTY :  The best PS3 GOTY. I prefer it be a retail pick (day 1 digital downloads are the same thing IMO), but it can also be a Vita or PSN pick if you prefer.

Runner-up: I'm a big beliver in Runner-up's. Because not every catagory has just one pick. So, feel free to choose a Runner-up. Runner-up's can be a Tie, but a two-way tie only. So, you can really only choose 3 games per catagory at most. Sorry, you can't choose everything. LOL! If you can't think of a Runner-up game, then don't write anything, it's fine.

PS Move GOTY:  Best PS move game. It can be a regular PS3 game with move support or just a PS move only title.

Runner-up:

PS Vita GOTY: This will be repeated below, but it's the best Vita game. It can be a Regular Vita game that you bought at retail or on the PS Store or it can be a PSN arcade game. It helps to own a Vita, but if you know enough about it and it's games, you can still pick.

Runner-up:

Multiplatform GOTY: Basically the 3rd best GOTY. It's a PS3 game that was multiplatformed on other systems and thus is the best game to get for any system. Note that you'll see Multiplaform in almost every catagory. So that's what it basically means.

Runner-up:

Action GOTY: Mostly the best 3rd person action game, but you can choose a First person shooter (FPS). The only requirement is that the game bascially be considered an action game. This can include a PS3 exclusive or multiplatformed game

Runner-up:

Multiplatform action GOTY: Your pick formultiplatform action game.

Runner-up:

Action/Stealth GOTY: A game that has both staelth gameplay and action. It could have a little bit of both or a lot of both.

Runner-up:

FPS GOTY: Best FPS game. Every list has one, mine's no exception. Basically if the game has you shooting from the 1st person perspective, then that's a FPS. This can include a PS3 exclusive or multiplatformed game. All non-Multiplatformed catagories will have this option.

Runner-up:

Military FPS GOTY: Miltary themed FPS. Your not shooting aliens, your shooting fictional human enemies.

Runner-up:

Multiplatform FPS GOTY: A multiplatformed FPS, not an exclusive game to the PS3.

Runner-up:

Racing GOTY:  Best racing game.

Runner-up:

Multiplatform Racing GOTY:

Runner-up:

RPG GOTY: Best Role playing game. Your pick can be a japanese turn based RPG or a action RPG. You can also add a seperate JRPG catagory if you prefer.

Runner-up:

Action RPG GOTY: Not a JRPG, but a action-based RPG.

Runner-up:

Multiplatform RPG GOTY:

Runner-up:

Platformer or family GOTY : Best game that has you jumping and climbing onto platformers through levels. Yeah, like a Mario game.  Or pick the best game that you think is fun to play for the entire family.

Runner-up:

Adventure GOTY: Not easy to define grant it, but think of what the word adventure means and apply it to the good games that you played this year. Because there are adventure games that were released.

Runner-up:

Fighting GOTY: Best fighting game. Picking diiferent characters from a roster to fight each other. Like Mortal kombat or street fighter.

Runner-up:

Sports GOTY:  Best sports game. It can be best arcade or sim sports game, it doesn't matter.

Runner-up

Puzzle GOTY: Best puzzle game. Like Tetris, but on PS3 or Vita.

Runner-up:

Scariest GOTY: Best game with scary moments. Like Silent Hill or past Resident evil games.

Runner-up:

Best Zombie game: Many games have Zombies, which was the best?

Runner-up:

Funniest game of the year: What was the best game that was also funny?

Runner-up:

Best open-world game: Any game with an open world design where you can choose to go where you want to at any given time. It can be a 3rd person or A FPS.

Runner-up:

Multiplayer GOTY: Best multiplayer in a game. Not co-op, multiplayer as in your playing with more than on eother person online.

Runner-up:

Sequel of the year: Best sequel game. Any game with a 2-whatever after the title. Also games that are established franchises that didn't have a prequel but have just a subtitle attached to it, can be considered a sequel.

Runner-up:

Port GOTY: A game that was on another system or a previous gen system that wes ported to the PS3 Yes, this is basically the HD remake catagory. PS1 and PS2 classics do not count, because they weren't upgraded graphically and trophies weren't added.

Runner-up:

Remake GOTY: Any HD remake from PS3, PSN, or Vita. Again, PS1 and PS2 classics are not remakes.

Runner-up:

Retro GOTY: Basically, the PS1 and PS2 classic catagory. Although old school relaunches of Sega games do kinda count.

Runner-up:

Most innovative GOTY: Another hard to define catagory unfortunatly. It's not best original game, but game that brought something new or innovative to the PS3. Like Littlebigplanet did a few years ago.

Runner-up:

Most original GOTY: Best original game that's not a sequel or an established franchise.

Runner-up:

Hardware of the year: Best hardware, not software. It can be an accessory or a new system.

Overall PSN arcade GOTY: Not a digtal download of a past or current retail game, but a PSN arcade game. There should be enough to choose from this year

Runner-up:

Multiplatform arcade GOTY: Best Multiplatformed arcade game. Non-PSN exclusive.

Runner-up:

Port or remake arcade GOTY: Best arcade game that was actually a port from another system. Yes, HD remakes or arcade games count.

Runner-up:

DLC of the year: Not a full arcade game, but downloadable content to any current game. DLC is any map pack, multiplayer content or expansions that you bought this year off the PS store that you thought was good.

Runner-up:

Biggest surprise GOTY: What game did you not know would be good, but suprised you that it was?

Runner-up:

Biggest disappointment of the year: What game should have been good, but wasn't? It's not the worst GOTY, but it's not as good as it should have been based on the hype and previews.

Runner-up:

Worst GOTY: This is the worst game of the year. Disappointing, yes but also just plain bad.

Runner-up:

Most Anticipated PS3 Game of 2013: My new catagory for this year. What new game that will be released next year that you most want? It can be a PS3 or multiplatform game. Whichever. The Vita form of this catagory is below.

Runner-up

PS Vita: If you own a Vita, pick what you liked. If not don't worry about it, you can skip this section.

Vita GOTY: Just repeat your pick from above.

Runner-up:

VIta arcade GOTY: Best Vita arcade game. Not PSN game, but a Vita-specific or version of an arcade game.

Runner up:

Vita multiplatform GOTY: Best Vita version of a Multiplaftomed game.

Runner up:

Vita action GOTY: Best Vita action game.

Runner up:

Vita FPS GOTY: Best vita FPS. IMO there was at least one or two.

Runner up:

Vita Platformer/family GOTY: Best Vita platformer or family game.

Runner up:

Runner up:

Biggest disappointment: Same as above. You can also include a worst Vita GOTY.

Runner up:

Most Anticipated Vita Game of 2013: The Vita only version of the same catagory as above.

Runner-up:

Also you can add your top 20-50 list either with the above list or just only do a top 20-50 list. Whichever.

Finally, I would like yo to consider doing a...

State of Playstation commentary (optional): Once again it's another year that's had some ups and downs. While my official pick for the 2012 "Game of the Year" isn't actually on a PlayStation platform, I've had some other favorites to choose from. This list I've mostly taken off the top of my head for what stood out. It's kind of hard thinking back to what actually came out this year with so many older freebies included with the batch of PlayStation Plus over time. I've also endured quite a number of older games this year, which helped to make the year more lively in gaming. Ultimately though, 2012 had some good games but also felt a little on the emptier side when compared to other years.

50) Oddworld: Strangers wrath (PSN and Vita)

State of Playstation commentary: It was an OK year. Not great, but OK. We had steady releases, but the delay of Bioshock infinite definatly left a void over the entire industry. And overall, I thought that Sony's exclusive releases were weaker than last year. Starhawk and Twisted metal are good, but neither is as good as some of the multiplatform PS3 releases that we saw. There were definatly fewer original games released this year, because we definatly got more sequels to existing franchises than we normally would. The exclusive PSN releases were good though. Journey and Unfinished swan are just amazing. And the PS2 classics list got better. PS move was OK. It's not a system seller and may never be, but there's certainly enough titles supporting the Move. And of course the Vita had a fairly good year. It's launch was extremely good and it got a steady stream of games. Not all were good, but some were. The only problem is that the multiplatform support for the Vita could have been stronger. The constant maintenance days were annoying though. And in all honesty, I still don't like the new PS store. But the bigger picture is that we are at the end of this gen. So, next year current gen games releases should be better. Now whether we will get the launch of the PS4 next year that's still uncertain. But, at the minimum we should at least find something out at E3 2013. So, we'll see. Either way I suspect 2013 might be a better year.

I liked Starhawk. it was on my semi-annual (6 month) GOTY list  IN June as my  GOTY. But too many good games have been released since. So, IMO it's not GOTY or action GOTY, but it share multiplayer GOTY with COD: Black op's 2.

State of Playstation commentary (optional):

Looking back, this year was really barren in terms of great games. Of course, 2013 already looks much better with The Last Of Us, GTAV, God Of War: Ascension, etc. If the PS4 is coming out next year, at least the PS3 is going out with a bang.

Re: ***Hawk's annual GOTY thread:2012 edition**

Well, at the risk of adding too much, I'm going to add a little bit more. LOL! Smiley Happy

I have 3 questions:

1) What current 2012 game are you playing and what's your current progress in the game?

2) What is the next 2012 or older game that you plan to play?

3) What will be your first 2013 PS3 purchase and what 2013 game will you likely focus on?

Note: 2012 means a 2012 release game. If your playing something older, feel free to add that instead. I like it to be a 2012 game, but I'm not going to be strict about it.

My reply:

1) What current 2012 game are you playing and what's your current progress in the game?

Borderlands 2. I'm  done witht he main story and am about to focus on the 2 expansion in hope of leveling up my Commando past level 34. I missed some of the side-missions and I still have the "Cute Loot" trophiy still to find, because a chubby enemy is a rare spawn. I wish I can do Co-op, but I can't find anyone on my friends list to play this game in co-op with me. Thus the one co-op trophy and the co-op bad-a** ranks are not possible. So, I'm going to continue until I'm done with the expansions. And yes, it's my GOTY because I've played so much of it and I want to play more.

2) What is the next 2012 or older game that you plan to play?

Call of Duty: Black op's 1. I need to focus on it eventually in order to beat it. Also, Uncharted 3. I can platinum it if I get the survivor trophy and beat it on Crushing mode. Oh,, I also need to begin Homefront again and beat it. So, I have a few options of game that I can play next year.

3) What will be your first 2013 PS3 purchase and what 2013 game will you likely focus on?

My first Purchase is Devil May Cry (you know, the reboot) in January. But the only new 2013 games that I can see myself focus on is either Sly 4 or Gof of war 4. I beat the previous games and so I can easily see my self focus on either two.

My only critque is that IMO Unfinshed swan is a better PSN game than Papo & Yo. Papo and Yo was a good Puzzle/platformer though. Also, I was put off by Azura's Wrath's over-the-top Anime action syle and odd story. So, I didn't get it. I got Dragon's Dogma though. It's not the best RPG GOTY imo, but it's worth mentioning. I didn't want to do a "Also's/honorable mention" list because that probably would have been too much. So, I personally chalk Papo & Yo and Dragons dogma to the top 50 or the "Also's" list.

1. I'm currently playing Binary Domain, amongst other titles. Stuck in the third chapter, those blasted robots have me pinned down on the highway. The giant robots keep raining down missiles every five seconds and then there's an army of various robots that come out and won't let up. Since there really isn't a good cover spot here, I'm not sure what to do (and the turret on top of the van isn't exactly a good way to go since those giant robots with the missiles are unbeatable).

2. I'm not sure. It's not like I'm not already playing other games. I've also Call of Duty: Black Ops II to play, for starters.

3. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is my next game. I'll focus on that.
