****Hawk's annual GOTY thread:2013 edition****

[ Edited ]

Intro) Well, here it is folks. The time of year when I post my annual GOTY thread. I started this a few years ago, when I saw a lot of GOTY posts, with very little detail to them. So, I decided to create a detailed GOTY thread. Because really, if your going to do a GOTY post, I say add as much detail as possible. This is what I've tried to do. I hope that for those intrested in posting your 2013 GOTY picks that you would please take your time and do so here.

What you need to know, before you start: The format is the same as previous years. The catagories are divided by genres and you also have an optional Top 20 to 50 list (Mininum 20 picks, but a max of at least 50) that can be done with all your other picks or instead of doing picks via catagories. But, all your picks have to be Playstation only games. That's still more the forum rules than mine, but I've maintained that for a few years now and that rule remains so for this year as well. Your game picks can be PS3 games, PS4 games, Vita games, and PSN games from all those systems. The retail releases and digital version have to be based on games that were released this year. It doesn't matter when you bought or downloaded them, as long as it was sometime in 2013. Otherwise you'd be listing Uncharted 3 and that would certianly not count for this year. I'm a little more flexible on PSN downloads though. Since release dates for those are harder to know, you can list any PSN game that you downloaded this year. Not last year, this year. Some of the catagories are self explanitory.  Multiplatform simply means a Playstation games that was also a multiplatform release. Runner-up choices to each game catagory simple means that your picking the 2nd best game in that catagory or genre. There can be a Tie's, but only a 2-way tie per catagory. Also, you don't have to have played your picks. There have been a few problems in the past about people not posting, because they didn't think that they played enough games. So pick games based on what 2013 games that you have bought or played, or if nothing else pick based on what you know. Finally, those that have decided to post have a long time to make your picks. Don't feel that you need to rush. You have until the end of next month or until you buy your first 2014 game. So take your time.

OK, here are the blank catagories and top 20-50 list. Copy, paste and then please fill them in at your leisure.

OK, now here are my picks. The reason why I waited until now to post this thread was because I wanted to wait until I had finished writing my picks. So, here they are.

State of the year and Playstation commentary:

Like it was in 2006, this was a transition year from one generation of consoles to another. The news for most of this year reflected this big transition to more powerful consoles. And yet when the next gen consoles arrived, the better games were still on the current gen. GTA 5, Bioshock: Infinite and The Last of Us all are current gen games that are better than any of the PS4 launch games. So as exciting it is to have more powerful systems, the PS3 still has value and will be supported for at least another year. How well each console making company did however, differs between the 3. However, for the purpose of this discussion on these forums, I only will discuss Sony and Playstation  In my opinion, Sony had the best 2013 out of all console manufacturing companies. They strongly supported the PS3 and Vita while announcing and then launching the PS4 by November. The PS3 exclusive, The Last of Us, is one of the best Games of the year and they had more exclusives than any other company. In fact, Sony also had the most amount of good 3rd party indie support for PSN games. This solid indie support has transferred to the PS4. And so the future PS3/vita game releases look strong for at least another year. The PS4 had  a very strong launch and this means better sales for Sony. Killzone: Shadow fall is the PS4 killer app triple A must-have title and the PS4 has better arcade titles than the other consoles. So, with support for all 3 of their current systems, Sony looks like they will have a good 2014.

State of the Year Commentary:

On the shallow end as with years in recent past, 2013 has not been a terrific year for video games in general. As per usual there have been a few outstanding games, but not as many as one would hope. From the PlayStation side I know a lot of people are convinced that games such as The Last of Us pushes the boundaries in terms of storytelling, gameplay dynamics, and visual appeal (amongst other things), but the game itself is not something I'd throw anywhere near the top of the heap. It's a good game and all, but it's not unique and it's not brilliant.

My most celebrated games from 2013 actually turned up on the Nintendo side once again. With Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon giving gamers a pretty entertaining creep through multiple mansions to sweep through for ghostly beings and memorable boss battles, and the kind of story that you want to cling onto even if the whiskers from your stache are falling off, it's all the kind of game I could support as this has been the Year of Luigi. Not to be left out, I'd consider The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds a better game in most aspects, but aside from the compelling ability to paste yourself onto walls and slip through cracks and such... I feel like Luigi gets the gold this round.

All that aside, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the Witch of course I think not only did a good job for the year itself but also gave gamers something kind of different. Traversing between this grand fantasy world and the one from Oliver's suburban home life, the game has players needing to head back at times to cure different people of the darkness surrounding them. The characters are likeable, the story can be enjoyed, and the game is visually appealing. I wouldn't say the game is great or anything, but I liked it. Resogun also sat well with me this year too, better than expected. Being the first PlayStation 4 game that made some sort of splash on the deeper end I welcome it.

Thanks fpr posting. My only one reccomendation is that if you don't have any picks for a particular catagory, delete the catagory from your list so that it looks cleaner.
