PS4 surround sound headset?

[ Edited ]
Jan 21, 2014

Alright, i'm planning on picking up a PS4 soon, but first I wanted an idea of what kind of headset to get. I want a wired surround sound headset around $100 (give or take $50). Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance :smileyvery-happy:.

Since you say give or take, you should open your mind up to an extra 80 instead of an extra 50 and get a really good setup.

Since you don't need wireless, my advice to you is to stay away from "Gamer" headsets for they underperform and are filled with gimmicks to drive up the price even on top of the licensing fees.

Here is the minimum setup you want and don't settle for any less.

Superlux HD668b or Samson SR850 headphones ($45 or so on Amazon)

Zalman ZM-Mic 1 ($7.79 on Amazon)

7.1 Dolby Surround Sound, Astro Mixamp Pro ($130)

For just over $180, you are looking at a setup that sounds like about $350 since those $45 headphones sound like a pair that performs like $200+.

Another great thing is in the future , you could always upgrade even more to maybe a pair of Sony MDR MA900's or AKG Q701's double amped with a FiiO E9.

Some people will come in here and tell you to get some Turtle Beach PX5's or Sony Pulse Elites. Ignore that entirely. Those are not even in the same league as what I am recommending. For I only wish somebody would have gave me this advice when I was buying those kinds of products.

Thanks a ton, this setup looks pretty dope! I'll get these as soon as I can get my hands on a PS4.

Re: Headsets for PS4

Jan 26, 2014

I just purchased the Universal Turtle Beach Headset for $79.99 & i have to say i was impressed i didn't think the quality would be as good but once i connected them correctly the sound was awesome for both gaming, clear voice no echo bass/treble options & few more options but for the price you cant beat it unless you rather have that little earBud in your ear. I would recommend these if you dont want to invest in a high dollar set they work just as good..

Also not to stir any trouble but for anyone for does buy this headset just know it's not hard to connect them like some people i've seen have said around the community below is the easiest way if your T.V does not have the 3.5MM Audio jack.

*PX22 comes with a inline amp powered by USB that plugs into your PS4 which also has the 3.5MM Audio jack for the T.V attached to it like you see speaker wires, So if you don't have that 3.5MM on your T.V no worry just carefully split the wire to enough slack to connect the 3.5MM Audio into your PS4 Controller change the output setting from your controller to ALL AUDIO & you are good to go*

Hope this is useful for the PS3/PS4 Community Members

Alright, I thought I’d do an overview of the top three wireless headsets you should either take into consideration and possibly buy. I will provide full written reviews by real editors,  Links, and a Pro’s and Con’s section by me (my opinion via bullet points). I’ve tested many headsets and configurations mind you over the years and thought I’d finally share what I believe many PlayStation fans should purchase to enhance their audio experience. So lets get right to it!

Tier 3

Playstation Pulse Headset Series

Price : $90 - $115

Sony Wireless Headset (Released 2011) | Pulse Elite Headset (Released 2012) | Pulse Gold (Released 2014)

Reviews :

Sony Wireless Headset - Review 1 | Review 2

Pulse Elites - Review 1 | Review 2

Gold Wireless Headset - Review 1 | Review 2My Review

Pro’s :

+ Excellent Sound Quality

+ Clear Voice Chat

+ Build Quality Continually Improves

+ Stylish, Simple Design

+ Multiple controls on the headset to adjust to your Preference

+ Pulse Elite Manager shows promise through Game Specific Profiles

+ Battery life 8 hrs

+ Extremely Affordable

+ Compatible with Phone/Tablet, PC, Vita, PS3, and PS4* (*1.6 patch Required)

Cons :

- Virtual Surround sound is lacking (Sony's proprietary surround sound did improve with the Gold's though)

- No Dolby Headphones Certification or DTS Headphone X Early Access

- Bass Impact a bit too harsh, may cause headaches (Elites)

- Slightly tight around head (clamp) but comfortable (Gold's much better)

Tier 2

Skullcandy Plyr 1 (Released 2013)

Price : $130

Reviews :

Review 1 | Review 2

Pro’s :

+ Excellent Sound Quality as Well

+ Really Great Surround Sound

+ Affordable Wireless Dolby Certified Headset

+ Clear Voice Chat

+ 3 EQ’s to fit your style

+ Customizable controls to fit your preference

+ Hook an Aux Device in for your own music

+ Unique Gamer Focus Design

+ Phenomenal Battery life ranging almost to 14hrs

+ Compatible with Phone/Tablet, PC, Vita, PS3, and PS4

Con’s :

- Sound Stage for surround not as expanded/open

- Sound quality is great but Highs are a bit short while lows not that impactful

- Slightly comfortable but clamps around head a bit tightly.

Tier 1

Astro Gaming Headsets

Price : $150 - $249

Astro A30 (2013 Ed.) | Astro A40 (2013 Ed.) | Astro A50 (2012 Ed.)

Reviews :

Astro A30 - Review 1 | Review 2

Astro A40 - Review 1 | Review 2

Astro A50 - Review 1 | Review 2 | Review 3

Pro’s :

+ Good Sound Quality

+ Phenomenal Surround Sound (and Dolby Certified)

+ Clear Voice Chat

+ 3 EQ’s for anyone’s needs

+ Extremely customizable controls, lots of em'

+ Very Comfortable

+ Great Design, Simplistic

+ Rugged Durability

+ Hook an Aux Device in for your own music

+ Compatible with Phone/Tablet, PC, Vita, PS3, and PS4

Con’s :

- EXPENSIVE

- Slightly Heavy

- Battery life lacking, 6 to 8 hours

Now you can also grab the Astro Mixamp (for $130) and use your own headset - Mixamp by itself is wired though.
