|Welcome to the PlayStation Community Forums

Refresh rates are determined by the source material [e.g. DVD, games, digital distribution material] furthermore, refresh rates are limited by the layer transport [e.g. HDMI,]  as well as, the displaying device, [e.g. TV]

Higher refresh rates play a bigger role in:

-- 3D TVs where some can do 60Hz per eye thus 120Hz

-- To remedy Motion Blur which becomes more apparent with bigger HDTVs. This is part of what gives some video output the now known.  as "soap opera" effect. This setting allows your TV to natively increase if not double the source material refresh rate.

If you want more then let me know Smiley Wink

In other words, if you want a 120Hz experience you will need a HDTV that support it, as well as, a HDM 1.4.   You can do this today with your PS3.  As for the PS4, on this area things will stay much the same. Check the HDMI 2.0 specs below.

This is so you have a better understanding of HDMI standards.

HDMI 1.4b was released on October 11, 2011.One of the new features is that it adds support to 3D 1080p video at 120 Hz -allowing frame packing 3D format at 1080p60 per Eye (120 Hz total) . All future versions of the HDMI specification will be made by the HDMI Forum that was created on October 25, 2011.

HDMI 2.0 increases the maximum TMDS per channel from 3.4 Gbit/s to 6 Gbit/s which allows for a maximum total TMDS throughput of 18 Gbit/s.[This allows HDMI 2.0 to support 4K resolution at 60  (fps). Other features of HDMI 2.0 include support for 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, support for 25 fps 3D formats, improved 3D capability, support for up to 32 channels of audio, support for up to 1536 kHz audio, support for up to 4 audio streams, support for 21:9 aspect ratio, support for the and audio standards, dynamic auto lip-sync, and additional CEC functions.

Honestly, there is no reason (other than 3D) for a refresh rate above 60Hz. The human eye sees no real improvement above about 24-30Hz (which is why both the cinematic and Blu-ray standard are 24Hz).

ETA: Hey, iOS 7 allows for mobile editing!

Well as you say if you want 3D 60hz wont cut it.  I got my 3d tv back in 2007 on the thought that some day I will make my tv brand new again and use the 3d feature.  A few years later I did just that and was so glad i considered this option so many years previous, it was like I replaced my old tv was a new fangled high tech device!

Also for blurays 60hz doesnt play very nice with a 24hz signal.  You get frame studder and an unnatural feeling to the moving picture.

60/24=2.5   My tv cant display 0.5 frames, can yours?  Maybe if it was interlaced, lol.

at 120hz you can display Blurays much better 120/24=5  Each frame gets displayed 5 whole times and so not only do you get better motion reproduction (Less blur/more detail) but the jerkyness of the judder does not exist here.

So now we have movies coming out in 48hz format, 120/48=2.5 again!!!  Darn those guys!  Now we need a multiple of 48 to get the best possible experience.  For this a 240hz screen should be just about right.

Now all this if fine and good but the technology of the panel is another problem.  LCD based displays are the slowest type you can buy.  Despite their ultra high refresh rates these tvs produce lots of ghosting(especially in 3D) and still have motion judder/blur in motion scenes.

If you insist on LCD based (AKA LED for newer models, dont be mistaken its LCD tech within) make sure the response times are as low as possible.  check out some reviews or even just compare the screen of choice to a similar plasma showing the same content.

Generally Plasma is much better at motion the LCD/LED tv's, if you cant tell the diff that LCD is just fine for you.

Cheers.

You know what is funny?

I made a thread like this years ago about the ps3 called "the ps3 should be 120hz and support 3D"

I got flamed so hard back then with people saying no way the ps3 could ever support 120hz as its so outdated, etc.

About 2yrs later the ps3 supported 120hz and 3D output, lol.

So Maybe Sony was gonna do it all along, or maybe they took my advise?

On the same note request what-ever you may like, if Sony loves you as much as me they will make it happen in time.

I would like to see at least a few 2160p games, if even just some small psn games or something, just cuz.

refresh rate is only going to be dependent on the frame rate of the source material....
