I thought the Cell processor in the PS3 was clocked at 4.8 ghz?

30 replies 13 views Edited Jun 10, 2005
I've been reading after E3 Interviews that the cell processor is,clocked at 3.2GHZ, not that I'm complaining, thats very fast... But I,coulda swore I remember reading that It will come out of the box at,4.8ghz?

First of all, don't judge a processor by it's clockspeed unless you are comparing the same ones (e.g. Pentium 4 to Pentium 4)

,

And their have been Cell prototypes clocked at 4.6 Ghz, but I'd imagine they get better yields at 3.2 Ghz and it likely runs cooler, which is better for the PS3.

IBM showed off the cell when it was fully completed and said it can reach speeds of 4.6 easily.
,
,The only problem was heat, running that high means it burns fast so the, cooling it needs (which IBM was working on still) wouldn't work in a,system, so they probably started clocking it down to see how fast they, could get it going without needing some big cooling technique, They, ended up at 3.2 (same as Microsoft).
,
,The Cell chip can reach 4.6 and beyond (when linked to others) but Sony never said that is what it would run in the PS3.

The PSP was also supposed to run higher than it does. 333MHZ when announced.....but capped at 222 for battery conservation.

And teh fact that no games needed 333mhz yet

Anyways - it was announced that there would be a 4.8 Ghz CELL, not that the PS3 would have one.

And like an other person said - judge not by hz, but by the performance. My 2.2 Ghz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ out performs my friend's Intel P4 EXTREME 3.8 Ghz processor.

Yes the cell is 4.8ghz.the one in the ps3 is not,3.2 ghz instead.,

yeah look at the athlon 64 bits... 2.0gHz clock running faster than 4.0gHz+ p4s

I wasnt judging Hz's to Another processor, I have no doubt the cell's,performance is outstanding, but lets face it, in any processor, the, front sides buz MhZ x the multipliyer factor gives the processor (If,supported) better performance.

Yup, you can't compare the clock speed if they are not the same processor.

,

Just like you can't compare Intel to AMD to PowerPC.  For example: Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.4GHz and PowerPC G5 @ 2.5GHz are equivalent to Pentium 4 @ 3.8 GHz.

,

You can't compare Xbox's Intel 733 MHz CPU to PS2's 300 MHz EE either.  So Microsoft was lying when they said Xbox is more powerful because it's 733MHz CPU is more powerful than PS2's 300 Mhz EE.  Saying Xbox's CPU is more powerful is like saying P4 3.8 GHz is more powerful than G5 2.5 GHz.  It's just Microsoft's smoke and mirrors.  The only reason why Xbox games look better is because it has a newer video card.
