I need this game injected into my veins, stat!
Holy crap! The wait for this is going to be tortourous!
Below were my thoughts on VR before this Megaton!
Virtual Reality Headsets will be a bigger phenomenon than Wii Sports, Wii Fit or Kinect ever were. The Oculus Rift was featured on numerous talk shows and multiple youtube videos with 1million+ views. Sony/PS4 needs to be on the ground floor of this phenomenon, rahter than playing catchup like it did with motion controls and the kinect.
There is currently an enormous amount of attention being paid to the Oculus Rift (a consumer gaming VR headset for the PC due out next year). http://www.oculusvr.com/
Even though it’s an year away from release, it’s already been featured on numerous talk shows such as Jimmy Fallon and youtube videos that garnered over a million views each.
"Rift could be the closest we've come to Star Trek's holodeck." - Gamespy
“...the effect of using the Oculus Rift as you play is mind-blowing." - G4TV
"...we found ourselves entirely absorbed; a gaming experience with a level of immersion genuinely unlike anything else we have ever encountered." – CVG
However, the Oculus Rift is for the PC, it’s not consumer friendly. The average person is going to disenchanted by having to mess around with drivers, patching their games to support it, getting, installing and setting up peripherals such as the Razer Hydra to make use of it as intended etc.
A virtual reality headset that is designed and integrated fully to work with the PS4, PS Move controllers and PS4 games, that doesn’t require you to fiddle around with drivers and software patches, a headset where the games are already designed to make use of the Playstation Move controller would be ridiculously successful. You just plug and play and the PS4 does the rest. This is a gaming phenomenon that will sweep the industry.
Sony has already led the way with VR. Sony already a consumer VR headset geared for movie watching but that doesn’t work well for gaming. I hope Sony chooses to capitalize on this and lead the way in terms of VR headsets in gaming.
Alternatively, if Sony doesn’t want to develop it’s own gaming oriented VR headset built from the ground up for the PS4 + Move Controllers, I think Sony would still be well served to communicate and work with the Oculus Rift developers and build native compatibility for the Rift headset into PS4 hardware, Move controller and PS4 games.
The brain is a tricky thing, you can put in front of it the most stunningly gorgeous and realistic imagery you can come up with, but as long as it's on a screen, your brain won't pay that much attention to it.
But the second you take that same scene and put it so that encompasses your entire vision, your brain makes you think you were literally teleported over to another world unlike anything you've ever seen before. All those beautifully rendered leaves, lighting and shadows come to life.
When you put on those glasses, its like you go from just sitting back and admiring the graphics to actually feeling like you're Nathan Drake, exploring a beautiful world unlike anything you've ever seen before. It pulls you into the games atmosphere.
And it doens't need to just be limited to gaming worlds. Imagine being transported to the middle of Paris, or the Grand Canyon, or the surface of pluto, the perspective of a white blood cell floating throught the blood stream or being sucked into a blackhole and watching the entire universe around you age and die within moments as you do so, that's how it feels, even more so if you integrate 3D surround sound and either motion controls with vibration feedback or better yet haptic feedback into the mix. And that's the kind of thing that appeals to everyone, not just gamers.
If you're thinking about VR as something to use to play Call of Duty, lazer tag and other twitch shooters, you're missing the point. While those games will still be cool with VR, what's exciting about VR are the possibilities it opens up. Open world games, horror games, even games like Platformers, take on a whole another dimension.
I wouldn't have said any of this if you asked me three months ago, but now that I had a chance to try it, I'm a believer. And I think you will be too if you seek out an opportunity to try this experience out for yourself.
I know this is a generic idea, one that in all likelihood sony engineers are already working on. I don’t seek nor expect any compensation for this.
Wow, some how I managed to read the title and only pick out "Last Guardian Oculus Rift"....
Seeing as my brain is already shutting down, I could only glance through the giant article. It would be nice if the idea of the rift tech caught on and is developed more. Like you said, it doesn't have to be limited to gaming, I would totally go through a well developed 1st person oculus movie, though keeping the immersion is probably hard if someone can look down and see no feet
Blah, I'll settle for movie games. Quantic Dream, I'mmmm waaaiiiting
Ahh, I didn't even think about the effect it will have on the eyes, but I suspect that can be corrected as the tech develops more. Between this and google glass, I'm almost sure it can be accounted for.
The first problem is hilarious though. Imagine playing a scary game, getting completely engrossed in it, and then you feel something creeping across your neck or BAM, someone slaps your shoulders. Rofl, poor guy is gonna have a heart attack
No offence, but that VR thing looks like a glorified "Virtual Boy". I can't imagine the headache you would get after using the VR for only one hour. My neck started hurting just thinking about having that VR thing strapped to my head.
