Online Saves (Cloud saving) confirmed for Plus Members

Kotaku has learned that, earlier today, Sony informed developers of a new feature for the PlayStation 3: the ability to save games in the "cloud".

Cloud storage means that, rather than keeping your save game data on your PlayStation 3's hard drive, it's instead saved remotely to a server that Sony runs. The advantage of this is that not only does it save the user space on their hard drive, but since it's tied to a PlayStation Network account, it can be pulled down to different consoles whenever and wherever the user desires.

First rumoured all the way back in 2009, there is of course a catch: it'll only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, not the great unwashed. Actually, there are two catches: Sony bundled the announcement with the clause that, because saving games to the cloud "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage", developers are able to opt out and bar their games from using it should there be a concern.

Sony will call the process "Online Saving", and it'll be made available as part of the PS3's upcoming 3.60 firmware update.

Yeah, I just hope it doesn't stay with Plus members.  Or at least, maybe Sony can offer it as an additional service to anyone.

Nice post; thanks for the info.  If Sony manages to throw another premium feature or two into Plus, they may actually drive the adoption of Plus rapidly.  Or they could revolt the masses, introducing a major backlash of negative posts and comments across the various gaming sites.

I have already learned the hard way to back up my important data to a little passport usb hhd, but I would probably be willing to also try a cloud service if it were included as part of my Plus subscription.  The details to come could be interesting.  What happens if your subscription expires?  Will you have access to your cloud saves, or are you going to be shit out of luck?

@Solar_Difusion

Because it will cost money to host the storage online for the saves it makes sense that it will be a Plus only thing, but maybe they will allow a limited version for normal users, only time will tell.

@jcalvert

People got all up in arms when Plus was getting auto downloads, but overtime people let it go. When sony announced Plus they made it clear that there would privleges that other users wouldnt be getting, so its not unexpected.

As far as what happens to those cloud saves you would probably just download them all to your system before your subscription ran dry.

I know it'll cost money.  Which is why I said I hope they offer it as a service to everyone.  I did mean paid service.

I could understand that cost because that could be real data, important data.

A bit much for just gamesaves, IMO.
