PS3 Downloaded Games vs Disc Copies Video Quality?

13 replies 5069 views Edited Sep 13, 2012

Hi everyone.

I'm wondering, are downloaded games off the PSN store compressed in regards to video quality compared to physical blu-ray copies?

I ask because I've noticed the games I've downloaded off the PSN store seem to be worse quality, more pixelated, and graphically inferior compared to their blu-ray counterparts. I tried both Dead Rising 2 and Infamous 2 downloaded and noticed that everything looked pretty jagged. On a whim, I then tried the disc versions, and to my surprise, the disc versions looked vastly superior. Is there a reason for this?

Thanks

They seem to not look quite as sharp as the disc version of the game but they do load faster which is nice.

Yea only makes since they had to compress it from a blueray to a file under 10 gigs

Yeah, figured that was the case. They really need to acknowledge this openly more, as the difference in quality is very noticable.

I dont have this issue....... I have Infamous 1 among a few other digital PS3 games. I also have a physical copy of Infamous.

The file size of the download is not going to be the size of the game.... you download a compressed file, and once it installs, it "extracts" itself to its full file size....

Mass Effect being something like a 15Gb download or something to that effect, its install size is going to double to close to 30Gb total (not including the size of the download)

IIRC, Infamous is a little over 10Gb installed on my HDD..... havent played it in ages tho.

i don't know if they're compressd or not, if they are then I can't say I have seen any noticeable difference.

And you don't see any difference in graphics between your digital and physical copies of infamous? While it isn't terrible, the quality difference in terms of pixelation and jagedness is quite noticable. Just looks more blocky on the digital version.

I think it varies game-per-game.

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Digital Version's intro was slightly compressed more compared to the Disc Version, but I don't see much difference. The tutorial videos in LBP2 Digital, however, suffer from horrendous macroblocking compared to the Disc Version. It's seriously close to Youtube's 240p. And I'm not even exaggerating.

I haven't seen any difference myself, but I have not ran a side by side to see for sure I think that would be the only way to tell and you would have to do it on two monitors that were exactly the same.
