PS3 HDD upgrade problem

7 replies 163 views Edited Jul 9, 2012
Hi all.
I have replaced my 80GB HDD with a 750GB HDD (I know that's huge but the offer was too good to miss!!). All went well...back up data on etc but I have noticed that the available space has reduced A LOT. I know the PS3 takes a bit for recovery etc so it's now 698GB in total, but I only backed up 64GB data and for some reason it's saying I only have 554GB of space available. This means theres 80GB space being used and I don't know what it is. Is there any chance I could have backed up twice? What else could be taking up this memory? Thanks!! Never done this before and quite proud of how well it went.

Yea the playstation itself reserves a portion of memory for system use and I dont think you could get to use it.

But would it reserve 130GB though? Cos it's already reduced it from 750 to 698 when it formatted. Now it's saying 140 ish is being used but only 64GB of that is my data.
Also earlier on I checked when I logged on and it said I was only using 64GB but now it's saying im using 140GB again. Very weird. Not sure if I've explained that well sorry. thanks

I actully had the same problem when I upgraded my hdd on my ps3. I also asked on this forum and the answer I got was that the sell the hard drive as 1000 mb per gigabytes but in real live it is acctully 1025 mb per gigabytes and that would account for the memory lost.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

I seem to remember reading on these forums somwhere that the ps3 reserves a percentage of the HDD's capacity, not a set amount. So a larger capacity HDD is going to have more space allocated for the system than a smaller HDD. At least that's how it used to be. They might've changed that since I upgraded my HDD a few years ago.

Race how you expect to be raced.

Actually I've just realised that the reason it went to 698 is cos of the formatting...sorry.

So does the ps3 reserve memory on a percentage system? Guess that would make sense as to why is seems like such a large amount, with it being such a big drive.

Yea read my second post. But the origanal post was saying that he thinks that there seems to be a lot more memory than it would normally considerably what the hard drive is used for.
