PS4 + SSD

21 replies 2397 views Edited Jul 7, 2013

Anyone who pre-ordered a PS4 going to get an SSD...

I have my eye on the Intel 520 480 gig... I assume the hard drive is going to be another 2.5" SATA drive but I'm going to wait for the first tech spy photos and teardowns to make sure...

6 gbps controller I imagine too.. its going to make a huge diff!

320 Gig PS3 Slim Move Bundle CECH-2501B w/ 240gb Intel 335 SSD
500 Gig PS4 Launch Model CUH-1001A w/ 512gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD
Vita Slim PCH-2000 w/ 8 gig card

Given the size of the console, I would imagine it will still be a 2.5" HDD.  I'm hoping they expand the bay to hold a 15mm HDD, though, so that a 2TB HDD will fit.  I imagine it will be SATA3, as well, which should improve load times dramatically.

Don't kill me for saying this but while ssd would be a great upgrade, what about a Solid State Hybrid Disc Drive like Seagate's 1tb one? I own that on my PC and its super fast, only cost $120!

For those who don't see a benefit of the upgrade, check out this article and video of the differences of a game like Rage and Skyrim running on different hard drives. Of course provided by the great people of Digital Foundry.

I don't think anyone's life is in danger over the choice of a faster hard drive for the PS4.  I can be argued that there is little to no benefit to a SSD or hybrid HDD for the PS3 (other than they run cooler), as the PS3 only runs at SATA1 read speeds (even the newest PS3 models are based on 7-8 year old technologies).

The PS4, however, is based on 2013 technology and as such, it should be assumed that the HDD will run on SATA3.

A piece of hardware will only perform up to the level of the hardware controlling it.

I've had a Intel SSD 335 Series 240gig in my CECH-2501B PS3 slim for almost a year now and I love it. It pretty much makes everything faster that is not accessing the Bluray drive.. even though its limited by the older SATA controller, its still much faster than a rotational drive... XMB is quick, loading and saving games is super fast which is great for in-game saves in huge world games.... texture loading is noticabley faster... installing and playing PSN downloadable games is amazingly fast as well...

So yeah just waiting on the confirmation of the form factor for the PS4 SSD and I'm going to swap the drive on launch date. I'll take pics for the forums

That 1tb hybrid is all sorts of sexy! Have the older 750 momentus xt hybrid and love it. And the 5400 ROM of the new druve shoukd alleviate some concerns wirh overheating 7200 drives, though ive had no issues with my slim.

IDE love to get an ssd for the os4. But, the current prices aren't worth it. So I may just upgrade it to a 1tb.

man ssds are too expensive, there are better cheaper solutions that gives you the best of both worlds.. the speed of a ssd with the capacity of a hdd at a affordable price
