Re: PS4: will it support DLNA

Nov 21, 2013

Okay, I had it in my head, I'll have to sell my current PS4 and get another newer one that does have these features (if they are added in the future)

But I'm not a technical guy and whatnot but would it be so simple as to apply a firmware update to add features like MP3 and DLNA support?

Is it really that easy?

I mean, not easy, obviously they have to code it and run it and test it and all that good stuff but (like I said, I'm not a technical guy) would it be that easy to get those features through a firmware update?

Watch this when he talks about meeting Yoshida-san.  You guys may find the anecdote very relevant to this thread.

I heard that DLNA is coming but it only works if you're wearing your official PS4 sweatshirt you have to buy online, and pay a monthly fee to have drycleaned at Sony.

Oh, well, I guess I'll just buy all my music and movies again from this online service they offer.

I can't see it taking long for them to add this feature. Doesn't seem like something most people would just want to go without.
Though, it could go the way of PS3 cross game chat.

PS3 wasn't able to implement cross game chat because of a hardware limitation.

PS4 has no hardware limitations for the stuff it's missing in comparison to the PS3. The only reason it's not there is because Sony hasn't implemented it.

Media server never worked very well with my PS3. =/ If they do add it hopefully it's more functional. Though maybe part of it had to do with my Internet connection strength, I don't know.

If they do add it to PS4 then great I'll be able to stream my movies that way and having no media USB support won't be as bad.

I would rather they enable playback of all the popular file formats. Like MKV and all of its various components.

That would please the community like nothing else.

I've since gone back to PS3.
I love my PS4 and all but with PS+, I've stockpiled so much games that I don't think I'll be buying anymore games for the year.
With my busy work schedule it will take me the year to finish them all.
And hopefully by then, the PS4 library will have grown even larger by time I beat them all.

Plus not much of my friends have a PS4 as yet, some of them just got their PS3 last year or so.

The only thing you need DLNA for Is playing music and that just because the Media streaming software Does not support HTML5 fully in the PS4.

FILMs and PICTURES are all Supported via the Web browser...

Music remains unsupported as the HTML5 players need more work to suppport PS4 And nobody has actively released a player for PS4... Does not mean its not possible but require a lot of work...
